This book is a great overview of the history of progressive Judaism. A great book that I definitely recommend to anyone who wants to familiarize themselves with this topic

Excellent history of evolution of Reform Judaism from Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) to mid_20th century, but is dense and not an easy read. Because the topic is important to me, I read in 20-30 page doses. Can't say how you'll feel, but I didn't want to read on without some time to reflect.

Dr. Michael Meyer us the expert on this aspectin of the history of Jews in Europe and North America.

There is a lot of research that went into this book. I feel that this book provides a nice overview.However, at times, I was frustrated. I wanted more detail and historical background.Overall, this is a nice contribution. I would definitely recommend it as an introductory book to this topic.

This book is the single best resource for the history of the Reform Movement. Dr. Meyer writes as he speaks; engaging and thorough.

As a committed Progressive Jew who fluctuates between Reform and Reconstructionist affiliation, I was glad to stumble upon Michael Meyer's excellent history of the Reform Movement. Meyer traces the development of Reform from the early years in Hamburg and Berlin to recent decisions made the Central Conference of American Rabbis. In so doing, he explodes a number of horrific myths that Orthodox "Judaism" lobs at Reform: that significant numbers of Reform congregations shifted their main day of worship to Sunday; that the movement is simply "watered down" Judaism; that Reform Jews are simply "lapsed" Jews who would be Orthodox if they didn't find it difficult or knew more about Judaism. Meyer also shows that, just as there are and have been important movements and currents within "Orthodoxy", there were and are many different movements and currents within Reform. The discussions of the movement's growth and foment on German soil, and the transfer of that foment to the United States, are particularly enlightening.

Michael Meyer's clear-eyed history of the Reform (a.k.a. 'Progressive') movement should be read by anyone who wants to understand the current fragmented condition of modern Jewry. Meyer makes eminently clear that it is the Reformers who departed from the traditional faith of Judaism and thereby founded a new religion at odds with (what they came to call) Orthodoxy. (Meyer himself is clearly favourable toward this approach, but he is at least unblinkingly honest about it.) Anyone affiliated with Reform or Progressive 'Judaism' who has not read Meyer's careful and thorough historical exposition probably does not understand the real foundations of his or her own movement.

It's the best history of Reform Judaism ever written. In addition Michael Meyer writes clearly and with precision. His knowledge of the topic is unparallelled.

I was eager to read Lamb's Shakespeare, but this edition is a terrible disappointment. The font size is tiny and all the illustrations are in black and white and most are reduced to the point of uselessness. The cover is pretty, but it is otherwise a badly designed reprint.Go to the Gutenberg Project, a free online database of works in the public domain. They offer the book in Epub, Kindle, html, etc. both with a without illustrations. The font is legible and can be enlarged and you will not have to pay a cent to read it.

Beware: The hardcover version illustrated by Joëlle Jolivet is NOT THE FULL COLLECTION of the Lamb adaptations of Shakespeare. It only includes 6 of the adaptations: Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, and King Lear. This is a big disappointment, since the item description says nothing about this being an incomplete collection. In fact, it appears misleading, saying "From Much Ado About Nothing to Macbeth..." in the description while not mentioning that their are only 4 other plays included! The slipcover and layout are well-done, but the woeful incompleteness outweighs the aesthetics.

I accidentally discovered a hardbound version of this work in a used bookstore perhaps twenty years ago, and recently gifted it to my oldest granddaughter, who has a love for Shakespeare's world. I then discovered the identical work -- for free! -- on Kindle. The plays are presented in a prose, short story format, written for young people. They are delightfully detailed and the language and style of writing, although somewhat dated, is smooth and fun reading. This is a definite recommendation for anyone wanting to discover The Bard's works without having to wade through the plays. For anyone needing a quick knowledge of a particular play, or just wanting to immerse themselves in the genius of Shakespeare's work, this is the book to get. And it's free!

There I was, happily reading my new book, when I was suddenly struck by the feeling that I was missing something. "Wait," says I, "how did we get to that point?" I re-read the paragraph, and still couldn't understand what was happening. I then realized that a chunk of text was missing, so I went online to see what were the missing words, figuring I could just write them in myself. No big deal. When I made it to the online archive, I discovered that AT LEAST ONE PAGE WAS MISSING, from The Tempest alone. I had not the patience to review each of the stories to see what else was missing, as that was an unpromising start. This was a big disappointment to my husband and sons who selected this as a present for me. I will now search for a different edition that will hopefully contain all of the stories, as well as each word of the stories.

This is an essential to children and grown ups alike as a way to comprehend the stories of Shakespeare, which as prose are as brilliant as the plays. I received this book (when it was actually a paper book!) when I was a child, and it aided me in understanding of all the great plays since the Lambs have converted the plays into short stories. Of course the well crafted dialogue and incredible insights and observations made famous in the plays can only be appreciated in the plays, but at least this book lays the ground work. But this is a highly valuable source.

He combined plot and sub-plot as any great chef combines ingredients. AND, he did it with wonderful language that was witty and fresh and provoking! Shakespeare broke the then-current rules of language: he verbed nouns!!! (Remember the language arts teacher who instructed that "contact" is not to be used as "John contacted his boss."? Shakespeare increased English enormously: some say 50% of words in ordinary use today are due to him!SO, if you read Lamb, you will be able to pick up a play, or enter a theater with a background similar to the original audience.p.s. Reading the great Greek and Roman myths will help you see many inside jokes and references; Bullfinch is still my favorite source - one rarely finds this level of language on WWW.

This book has arrived at a time when teachers need it most. Schools across the country are currently focusing all their efforts on teaching to meet the new Common Core Standards. Integrating the Arts Across the Content Areas re-assures teachers that they can meet the standards and teach creatively at the same time, all the while addressing needs for differentiated instruction and thematic learning. Every classroom teacher should read this book cover to cover to find great solutions to meeting standards and also the needs of every child in their classroom. Focusing on how arts strategies can meet curricular needs, the book is divided logically into seven chapters, six of which focus on individual art forms (poetry, music, storytelling, theater, visual arts and movement)and adaptations for their use in the classroom. The seventh chapter addresses planning and assessment, key to the success of an integrated arts classroom. Each chapter includes sidebars with fabulous resources, ways to meet the standards and activities to prepare the teacher to teach in this "new" way.If we are to teach our students 21st century skills, we can no longer teach to the test. By the time the test is taken, new knowledge and skills will be needed to succeed in our rapidly changing world. But by using arts strategies to teach in all content areas, we are also teaching focus, creative thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Students learn how to make connections across areas of study, and new ways to show they know what they know. These are skills that our students will have to have in this century to survive. Donovan and Pascale have given teachers a highly readable, practical text for teachers who haven't given up on the art of teaching. I would go so far as to say that if the lessons of this book were employed in every classroom across the nation, we would see a dramatic increase in success among the students who usually fail, and an increase in productivity and creativity in all students.

I love this book. It provides great activities for integrating arts in the elementary curriculum. The Table of Content shows at the end Appendix A thru E from pages 197 - 210. However the book ends at page 200 and rest of the pages are simply missing. So I am not able to see the references on page 210. I already wrote all over the book now and I do not want to return it but disappointed.

This book is full of great ideas for integrating the arts into various academic areas. The ideas are written in a clear format and can be used in an instant. Each main area of art is included. I have ordered numerous copies to share with mentoring teaching artists who work with classroom teacher training.

Well written, reader friendly, and filled with practical ideas. I also appreciate the arts advocacy and literary arts sections being included. I'm using this as a text for a university course I teach because it's affordable and concise, and I want my students to spend more time creating than reading.

If you're a teacher and you need methods on integrating content areas, get this book. Cheap and many great strategies to get students engaged in lessons.

This is an excellent book for the advanced all-grain brewer, or those who are interested in some historical background of classic styles. It’s well written, concise, and engaging. The author, Jeff Alworth, surveys many different brewing traditions (e.g., British, German, Czech, etc.) and covers select major styles or substyles originating from those traditions.Although everyone will have a different reason for enjoying this book, mine was the chapters on Czech brewing. Until the 2015 update to its guidelines, those of us who rely on the BJCP for style information would never have known the Czechs have an enormously rich brewing tradition beyond the narrow Bohemian Pilsner. Those chapters were eye openers. Moreover, Alworth provides an excellent and plain-English explanation of the decoction process.Brewers interested in trying out wild or spontaneous fermentation will find this book well worth the cost, too. Alworth provides a few approachable and practical methods for brewing beer with commercial or wild “funky” yeast that should set you on the right path. As good of a book as it is, feel free to skip Mike Tonsmeire’s “American Sour Beers” until you’ve brewed a batch or two using Alworth’s methods and feel comfortable with the process and your results.That said, don’t expect any “secrets” to be revealed in this book. It’s chock full of insight and techniques that will improve your brewing and better enable you to create authentic versions of classic styles, which is nothing to complain about. But there are plenty of chapters containing interviews with brewers who declined to explain particular recipes or brewing schedules they use for their beers. In other words, nobody is disclosing trade secrets that will give their competitors a leg up.For example, Guinness brewer Fergal Murray mostly recites marketing points when discussing his flagship beer (“Guinness mystery”) without identifying the source of its uniqueness. (40) The Czech brewers are especially tight lipped: Pilsner Urquell declined to provide a sample recipe for the book, citing “proprietary procedures and ingredients,” (128) and U Fleku likewise stopped assisting the author for fear of “divulg[ing] proprietary information.” (138)They’re unlikely to trip anyone up, but there are two technical errors to watch out for. On page 173’s discussion of Saison mash schedule, the final sentence should refer to a warm mash, not a warm fermentation, at 153-155F. Page 208’s discussion of Italian Lagers contains several temperature references, with one in particular containing an obviously incorrect Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion. (Another reviewer claims there are "a dozen or two" typos in the book, but other than the two I've mentioned, I found only one other, on page 170. I don't think that person was counting very carefully.)Storey Publishing is really turning out to be a reliable source of quality brewing literature. Considering some of the recent misfires issued by Brewers’ Publications recently, I’m hopeful Storey will continue attracting authors like Alworth for even more brewing content.

I reviewed several chapters in the book the first day after receiving. If you are a relatively new all grain brewer (let's say 30 batches or less under your belt) and looking for a concise survey of and tips/recipes for several styles of beer, this is a GREAT choice for you. It will definitely help.I returned the book, but there's nothing wrong with it... it's just a bit basic for my needs now. I'd prefer a deeper dive, which would require an encyclopedia-sized book at this broad scope. Don't let my review turn you off. If you want to have a good starting point for many beer styles, this is the book for you. If you've honed in on 5 or 6 styles that you love to drink and brew, and you want a really deep dive into those styles so as to perfect them, this book is probably not for you.

This is a great book for advanced home brewers wanting to more deeply study a culturally specific style. I really enjoyed the format and the investigative work that went into this book. I found the interviews and insights from the brewers to be extremely helpful in refining my understanding of what goes into certain styles and techniques for brewing. The author also did an exceptional job attempting to take professional, production-scale methods and reducing or augmenting them for the home brewer.

I am giving this book 4 stars because it is a very well thought out, well written book on the historical and cultural aspects of beer styles with an abundance of tips that can only be garnered by actually travelling to the destination countries, visiting with the master brewers and in some cases, participating in the brew. I especially like the portions of text that contrast techniques used by different master brewers for a style both within the same region and from different parts of the world. I learned a lot from this book and as a professional brewer, will use as a reference from time to time.With that said, the reason I withheld a star is because Alworth does the one thing that I find very distasteful. He often refers back to American brewers and beer tradition in a sort of negative connotation that implies we do everything wrong and have an abundance of misconceptions about English, Belgian, Russian et al. beers and processes. It continues pretty much relentlessly throughout the book with an air of disdain that is boorish.

This book comes from the author's world travels, meeting some of the world's top brewmasters and learning how they produce their beer. It's filled with a LOT of great detail on malt, mashing, hopping, water chemistry, fermentation, and everything associated with brewing beer. I'm not even finished reading it and I've already learned a lot - and seen my beers improve as a result. (As one example, I went from third place in a homebrewing competition last year to first place this year!) If you often feel like the beers you've made are close, but not quite as good as you want them to be, this book might help you get the rest of the way there.

so much juicy detail on what beer styles ACTUALLY are, instead of what people THINK they are. A great read with lots of good recipes, too.

This was a Christmas gift for our grandson. He is enjoying it.

Gr 1-5-A retelling of a Slavic folktale. Marushka, an orphan, does all the household tasks. No matter how hard she works, it is never enough to please her hard-hearted aunt and cousin. As the young woman finds pleasure in her burdensome work, her beauty increases. The jealous aunt and cousin plot to get rid of her, sending her off in the dead of winter, first to find violets, then strawberries, and then apples. Alone in the forest, Marushka climbs to the top of the mountain and discovers 12 men, representing the months of the year, seated around a fire. Sympathetic to her plight, January briefly changes places with the month that will enable her to complete her task. The author does not provide his sources for the tale or information on its roots or variants. This version ends with a surprise: the small dog that appears in the illustrations is the narrator of the story, a twist that seems unnecessary for the well-told folktale. The framed paintings with captions contribute to the traditional tone of the story. The bluish hues and curving, lacy bare branches are effective in creating a sense of the cold, mysterious world.
