A most excellent read, Paul Lobo captures in words the adventure of 30 years running into ships, in the fog, in the rough weather, in the rain, the good days and the bad days. His descriptions of situations he encountered will elevate your heart rate, cause you to swear like a sailor and maybe even run for the rails to "feed the fish". As a professional merchant mariner myself, I can relate to many of these moments and they ring as true as the ship's bronze bell. We currently own the P/V San Francisco he writes about as the 85' boat the Pilots had commissioned in 1973 and she is a wonderful vessel. Makes us proud to think of all the good work she did for 29 years with the Pilots. ZephyrNW is our ship and FB page, if you like "Crossing the Bar" you may also like following our adventures.
Mark Twain described the pilotage profession as representing "the only unfettered and entirely independent human being that lived in the earth". Paul's well written book gives many examples of how Mark Twain arrived at this definition. Reading "Crossing the Bar" was like reliving my 30 years as a pilot in SW Alaska (where we handled many of the same ships mentioned in Paul's book). For those contemplating a career as a harbor pilot, Paul makes the point that success in such a career choice depends upon savoring the challenge and enjoyment of shiphandling. The book is highly recommended for anyone having any interest in what occurs on the bridges of ships entering and departing the world's ports. Well done..
Captain Lobo's book covered an area and people with whom I am very familiar. I made my living as a Ferry Boat captain and my brother, Frank, was one of Captain Lobo's colleagues in the Bar Pilots organization. Captain Lobo vividly describes an exciting world unknown to most people. Piloting the world's biggest ships on a dangerous bay, at times in dense fog, requires great knowledge and skill. The ability to tell that story in print is a skill that few people have. Paul has it.
Interesting subject matter. However, to echo the sentiments of some of the other reviewers the book doesn't flow well, is poorly edited, and repetitive in some places. It is replete with dropped words, misspellings, and jumbled sentences. And has been noted before, this most accomplished Captain unfortunately in places, used the book as a platform for spite and vindication against people that crossed him. The self aggrandizing about his purchase of his "first" upscale foreign automobile is indicative of the overall tone. The stories are grand, the techniques of salesmanship are instructive and amazing. It would have been preferable if Captain Lobo had spent some of his hard earned and fabulous wealth on a professional editor and stuck to his undeniably accomplished maritime skills.
While reading this book I flew to the USA to attend my youngest son’s wedding. During my 10 day stay in California I cleaned out my storage unit before returning to Thailand. As I was digging through dusty boxes containing books, photos and mementos, I came across a SF Pilots patch suitable for stitching onto a baseball cap. There was a short note from Capt. Paul Lobo attached to the cap and I remembered him giving it to me after piloting my ship into the Oakland Middle Harbor Terminal. What a coincidence!I am a retired sea captain and really enjoyed reading about a life at sea from a pilot’s point of view. I sailed with one of the pilots mentioned in the book on my first trip to sea and remember another who piloted my ship because he was so “colorfulâ€. A pilot’s job is very demanding and requires a skill set similar to but different from that of a ship’s master. Pilots go on a variety of ships and the equipment is different on each one. A pilot has to adapt quickly and learn as much as he can about the maneuverability of the ship in a very short time while piloting. He also has to consider unseen forces such as wind and current while maneuvering in extremely confined areas. One miscue and the ship is either aground or has damaged a pier and perhaps a multi-million dollar shore crane in the bargain. In many instances there is little room for error and the pilots usually have a Plan B or C when things quickly go to the bad. You will find all that and more in this book.Some pilots have very large egos based on their specialized skills and experience handling literally thousands of ships. Not so with Capt. Lobo. He tells his tales in a very engaging and self deprecating manner. He also writes in a way that a mariner knows exactly what he is talking about and a “landlubberâ€, who has never been to sea, can also understand and enjoy. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who loves ships and the sea or has ever wondered what goes on those big ships coming into port or heading out to sea.
The story is interesting, however the writing is not the best quality (I understand that pilots are not trained writers). There are numerous distracting editing errors throughout the book that are disappointing (with technology what it is today you would think these errors would be easily caught). If the book makes a second printing it would behoove the writer to address these two things for future readers.
This book is a collection of sea stories covering the many years the author spent as a pilot around the SF Bay. If you aren't familiar with piloting it will give you a real appreciation for the difficulty and danger of their job. The high point is his description of what really happened in the Cosco Busan oil spill.But this book really needs an editor. There are numerous spelling and grammar errors. Organization of the stories into chapters is rather haphazard. Some of the nautical concepts aren't adequately explained. And some of the stories just end, leaving the reader wondering what happened next. The author isn't a professional writer and so he should have had a better editor to produce a coherent book.
