I have loved all of the Superman movies, as well as the show Smallville. However, I don't enjoy comic books so I felt as if I was missing out on a lot of fun facts and information about America's superhero. This book was perfect for me. I've learned a lot from it, just from flipping through the pages. It has beautiful pictures and it is a great size. I'll be displaying it on my coffee table in my new apartment.

I loved the storyline and I find the main character, Trinity, likable. She is immature and impulsive, but she realizes her faults and always tries to do the right thing. She's not dumb by any means, and the best part about her is her character development - she definitely grows throughout the novel, in a way that reads like a coming-of-age story... if typical coming-of-age stories included ghosts, gargoyles, and demons. Also, she's going blind; normally I find a strong focus on disabilities in characters to be rather annoying, but I thought the author, Jennifer Armentrout, did an amazing job of not letting the disability define Trinity. You never forget that Trinity can't see - but you're also constantly reminded of how she is able to get around it. Trinity does not come across as a weak character by any means, blindness or no. She is a crazy-strong supernatural being who happens to be going blind.The first half of the novel is slow - it sets the stage for the second half, and you really, deeply get to know the main characters through their day-to-day interactions, thoughts, and feelings. It's interesting all the same, but it didn't pull me in the way the second half of the novel did - I could NOT put the book down during that action-packed time.The ending completely broke my heart, and I shed several tears... but it's NOT a bad ending at all. It's bittersweet. Oh, but if you're concerned about the romance aspect - don't be. *wink wink*Another point about the ending: it doesn't end on a complete cliffhanger, but you can just tell that the story is far from over. There's still several unresolved mysteries that the characters are fully aware of and will need to address. I imagine the sequel will be like a "part 2" to the same story, rather than a new story following the same characters.This is an amazing story with amazing characters and I highly recommend it. The ONE THING that bothered me was that Trinity is the narrator. While I like her, I don't really want to be in her head, with her speaking to me, all the time! She narrates in teen-speak, "He sounded surprised, which was messed up since he didn't know me" and injects "like" everywhere. Aaaaaagh.

Trinity Marrow is a teenager with secret superpowers (and some not-so-secret ones, too) living in a community near Washington, D.C. where she is protected by Wardens - shape shifting gargoyles who hunt and kill the demons that pose a lethal threat to her. She has an absent father (who may or may not "call" her to action), a recently deceased mom who she still misses very much, and a Protector in the form of Misha to whom she is bonded since childhood. (She tried to kiss him recently, but it was like kissing her brother.) Trinity longs to go out on her own, and at eighteen is legally able to do this, but has a degenerative vision impairment and her guardians are also ambivalent about this. When she meets Zayne, a visiting Warden from D.C. a few years older and is, as by young adult fantasy law, as brooding as he is hot, Trinity's interest is piqued, even though - as per YA fantasy - she also finds Zayne quite annoying since he keeps asking nosy questions about her personal life. Shortly thereafter, Trinity is attacked by an unknown assailant, which is how the Wardens figure out that there is something mysterious out there which puts them both in danger. Also, Trinity's Protector goes missing, requiring Trinity and Zayne to travel outside her community to the Big City. There we learn more about Trinity's real identity and Zayne's mysterious past, as well as meet a couple of Major Player Demons and Zayne's old girlfriend. When not just demons, but Hellraisers, Imps and more decide to congregate for an epic battle between good and evil, Trinity must fight to rescue Misha and also come to terms with her insecurity over Zayne.Oh, and that "final battle," thing is actually misleading. The door is left wide open for sequels.Thoughts: This is a pretty by-the-book example of most found in this genre. It takes place firmly in the "Twilight" zone with a heroine who doesn't realize how attractive she is to guys, and things do get steamy beyond she and Zayne simply exchanging smoldering looks but not until about four hundred pages in. Trinity's narrative is written in teenspeak, i.e. she notes during the battle that a demon is "so not" going to pull her hair, and there is plenty of wisecracking banter between characters. There's also the reliable trope of the characters becoming witty under pressure - i.e. when their lives are in direct danger. All of this should translate nicely on the big screen, if Hollywood comes calling (the author's other novels have also been appropriated for TV/film according to the back blurb). However, Trinity is a sympathetic heroine, and her world of ghosts, imps, etc. is an intriguing one, offering amusing explanations for everyday phenomenon (i.e. the demons deciding to muck about with Congress-people). I would recommend it for those readers who enjoy this genre and have a weakness for heroines with hunky love interests and amazing superpowers.

This was an enjoyable read- I'm starting to get more into YA and fantasy (after years and years of reading only literary fiction and biographies, period- so it's a whole new genre for me) and even though I'm a little iffy about fantasy "Storm and Fury" was well conceived enough to keep me interested.The book is about Angels, Gargoyles (who come to life in human form, and they are called "Wardens"), Demons, and all sorts of creatures in between. They live amongst humans in the not so distant future, so the book is sort of set in the "right now".Our heroine, Trin (typical name for a character in this type of book) is a unique blend of human and... otherness (it's a plot point so I won't reveal it.) She's a mix of a precocious teenage girl and Deadpool, which I actually did not enjoy- when people are fighting for their life, the idea of them making snappy comments and puns doesn't really do much for me. She meets stunningly beautiful but distant Warden Zayne (again with the names...) and her world goes off kilter.There are lots of fighting scenes, a pretty hot romantic scene, the obligatory "tough girl protagonist puts on a super revealing dress and shows off her body" scene, lots of jokes that do not land (at least for me) and some twists and turns along the way.When I first started the book I thought I had accidentally picked up the second or third book in a series because very little is given context in the first several chapters, but things are explained as the story unravels.Not my favorite YA fantasy by a long shot, but it kept me interested and reading. I'd kind of rate it in between 3 and four stars, but giving it four stars because it ultimately delivers what it promises- a YA fantasy that's not too stark.

Terrific new book in the whole francophile genre. I just got it delivered to my kindle, and have skimmed thru it. Each chapter takes a look at how French women handle different aspects of feminine life from skin care to clothing, diet, exercise and far more. This is a grown up version of Helena Frith Powell's "All You Need to be Impossibly French" intended for the over 40 crowd. It is a longer version of Anne Barone's Chic and Slim Toujours; Aging Beautifully the French Way. It doesn't copy either author, it adds to the information and complements it.The preface starts by asking what age has to do with anything really? She briefly explains her move to France for 2 years that morphed into 25 and still going as she met and married a charming French man. Like others before her, she looked around her and saw a different landscape. She liked how French women around her approached life, and set out to find what they were doing that made them a bit more attractive, different, worth emulating.As she covers each subject she uses a lot of different sources from dermatologists to her French girlfriends. The information is extensive and each chapter had new stuff I've not bumped into before.. This is an excellent new book in what is becoming a crowded field. Entire books are written on the French diet, and her chapter summarizes much of that wisdom, but she gives fresh good advice.Even if you own Helena Frith Powell, Debra Ollivier, Anne Barone, Mireille Guiliano, Jennifer Scott and Marie-Anne LeCoeur you will not be disappointed in this new book.Chapter 1 begins with Allure. A very French concept and one that encompasses the whole person, brains, soul, heart and body. What goes on inside, makes a great difference to the attractiveness of the whole package. This has to do with decisions and priorities. In a sense this chapter and the ninth chapter are the bookends of this book. Some great advice aimed at over 40 women. Hopefully younger women reading this will remember that and not complain about it. She does give some advice in AVOIDING things like smoking and sun exposure. Apparently a lot of older women in France ARE quitting smoking simply for the sake of their skin. Who knew? I was fascinated by a tip, new to me, about soaking the feet in a bath of warm water, epsom salts and ASPIRINS. Yes, she adds a couple of aspirin to the soak, which soften the hard skin, and helps slough dead skin. Makes perfect sense since Aspirin is also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid or BHA for short in creams and potions that work at loosening dead skin cells. Much more in this informative chapter.Chapter 3 is on Makeup, The focus is building a light, natural look. Chapter 4 on Hair, Cut, condition and colour has some excellent tips by 2 top French colorists which I plan to try soon..Chapter 5 covers Dieting and the art of eating well. This one has a few new wrinkles to the whole French diet paradox but for the most part it's common sense and if you've read widely in this subject, it won't be much new. However it's always nice to hear it stated a slightly different way, and she does add a couple of new things from a French nutrition expert.Chapter 6 is Exercise--and she says yes, as French women age in the baby boomer generation, they have definitely picked up the exercise habits. But you still won't catch them hanging out all day in exercise gear, nor are their exercise get ups baggy, loose or in loud screechy colour combos. As always, they fit well, show off the body that took so much effort, and announce quietly with conviction that this person maintains her style and chic always.Chapter 7 On to the closet and the fabled French wardrobe. Less about the minimalist wardrobe and more about dressing well to suit yourself. Chapter 8 Accessories. How to deploy them effectively. This is another chapter worth the price of the book just for the tips alone.Chapter 9 pulls it all together. I'd call it being fun to be around but the author talks about poise and charm. It's something that is often lost in a white knuckle drive to succeed here in North America. Just how much fun ARE you just to hang out with. Do you put your career and your goals so far in the front that your friends, husband or kids feel they come a far second. She gets into something I've really only heard Anne Barone get in depth with and that is the intellectual legacy of the salonistes. The art of conversation, the development of the intellect as essential to the whole package as laughter and a warm smile.The epilogue is aptly titled La Nouvelle Moi, A Work in Progress.Great book, loved it, and I'm glad I bought a copy. It is a complement to the authors above, and is a welcome addition on my bookshelf.

This book has some good advice for women who want to age well and with savoir faire. Women often take care of everyone else but themselves. The instructions on aircraft to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting someone else (take care of yourself first) holds true of 'real life' situations. This book is full of encouragement to women to take good care of themselves.The advice to eat well but sparingly, go very light on alcohol, drink lots of water, exercise, cleanse and moisturize your skin religiously, don't overdo makeup, get a flattering haircut, do as much "investment dressing" as you can afford, take care of the clothing and shoes that you have, and stay engaged and informed with the world around you is terrific advice for everyone. Also, if you do these things, you end up saving time and money. A few well-chosen outfits can last for years with good care and you can jazz them up with accessories that do not have to be pricey. Exercising and watching what you eat and drink keeps you healthy; it also means that you will be able to fit into those well-chosen outfits for longer, which saves money. A flattering haircut that works with your hair rather than against it means you will look good without constant fussing and using a lot of hair products. Good skin care means you spend less money on makeup because you will use less of it. Streamlining your makeup routine saves time and money. Keeping up with world events and cultural activities will enrich your life and make you an interesting person to be with. Et cetera. This is sound, practical advice, and the French are noted for their practicality.However, what I find ludicrous is the idea that women in France--or to be precise, women of a certain socio-economic and educational level in the French capital--are the only ones who live this way. I live in Washington, DC, and I see many women of a certain age who are slim, dressed nicely (which doesn't have to mean expensively) attending lectures, concerts, the opera, art exhibits, etc. I definitely see women like this all over the place in New York City. One wonders where in the US the author was from that she seems unaware of this--the text on pages 221-222 would make you think that French women are unique in attending the ballet, lectures, and foreign movies. Women who age well can be found all over the world. In fact, my role model for aging well is a German woman whom I met in Munich in 1984 when she was about 47 and I was 28. I lived with her while attending the Goethe Institut. She was engaged, artistic, chic, well-read ... and all this was done as a divorced single mother on a social worker's salary. At age 75, she is still the same. She is one of the most influential people in my life.You don't need wads of money, expensive clothes and skin products (the author name-drops several pricey products and clothing lines throughout the book) to age gracefully and with class ... and you certainly don't need to be French. I *greatly* admire the French emphasis on living well with aplomb but books like this one perpetuate the idea that this can only be done in Paris, and not just in Paris, but only in certain arrondissements. If 'Forever Chic' inspires women to take better care of themselves, that's all to the good. Read it for the good advice on self-care--read it especially for the idea that you are worth the time and effort--but don't think for a minute that it can't be done, and isn't being done, right here in the USA, and elsewhere.

I've bought and read every single one of the "French/Chic/Thin" books. Some have been great, some not so much. This is the very best of them all if you're over forty. (If you're not, read Jennifer Scott's Lessons from Madame Chic--it's tout charmant.)Tish Jett gives it to us American women straight. I bookmarked several pages as I read for later reference and immediately made an appointment with a dermatologist. Next, I'll go through my closet and use her principles to purge, refine, and upgrade (all on a budget).I'm a huge Francophile. I've visited France several times, but I can never get enough. With Tish Jett's help, though, I can have a little bit of France with me all the time. Highly recommended.

I think Ms Sands just doesn’t like writing historical any more. I have read all the historicals and they go down with each, starting about 4 books ago. The characterization and emotion have been missing for a while. So I think her heart is in vampire books or she’s writing too many at a time. I think the publishers are to blame as they push these writers to spit out anything twice a year. Sorry publishers if you look at the best books they take a year or more. Authors need to put their foot down .

As the Highlander series continues, the plots get thinner. This story has a good outline and starts out cleverly but as it progresses, all the reader finds is a bit of improbable mystery surrounded by a heavy dose of filler. Too many characters from previous books, too many trays of food carried up the stairs, and too much hand wringing about the romantic relationship bog down this latest Highlander story. This story is just barely interesting and only if a reader has followed the series.My guess is that Lynsay Sands is no longer a person but is, instead, a franchise. The high caliber that is found in early books by Sands has become watered down in a effort to push as many books out as quickly as possible. Very disappointing.

Lynsay Sands never fails to create unique characters. No need to repeat the blurb, I fell in love with Evi right from the beginning and I was already in love with Conran's character from prior books in this series. I love that the Buchanan family continues to grow through marriage and birth of the next generation. I can't wait to see which of the last three single Buchanan's get their book next.

This is a wonderful, read! I loved the characters, they are lovable and funny.And Evi and Conran, we're born to be together, and if she hadn't kidnapped the wrong brother, they might never have met. Happy reading! There story will keep you turning the pages. Thank you!❤️

A sweet, funny and definitely not to be missed Highlander romance that follows a young woman trying to save her dad buy "kidnapping" a legendary healer. The healer, or the person she thinks is the healer, does his best whilst being completely taken by the stubborn, feisty red head.It's funny, sweet, action pact ride that will leave you feeling satisfied you took the journey.

Love the Buchanans, et al.! This was a favorite of mine in the whole series! IT brings. ALL the Highland brides and the Buchanans together! I can t wait to read more of this huge family s stories and escapades!

I have enjoyed this whole series. The plots are very similar, but fun. Have enjoyed getting to know the Buchanan brothers and their ladies. Got the books a little out of order, but it hasn’t made any difference. The books keep you interested to the end. Have enjoyed learning about historical Scottish articles of clothing. Even watched a YouTube video of a man pleating and donning a plaid. Interesting.

I wanted to love this, unfortunately this is basically a retelling of previous books in the series. This story didn't have the humor that earlier books did. I love the series, and hope that the author can come up with something different for the remaining brothers.

I've read over 100 business books over the last 2 years. I keep my top 12 business books on my desk as business manuals for review. Without a doubt this book is one of those 12. I read this book as part of my exploration of the HBR "10 Must Reads" series. In typical HBR style, this book contains an eclectic collection of articles which come together to provide one of the most comprehensive tomes I've seen on business and personal strategy.I recommend it to anyone who is trying to understand the core concepts of strategy, especially those who need to identify and separate various tactical actions and operational principles from the underlying strategic principles. I found these insights from some of the world's brightest minds to be just what I needed to properly set me on the path to become a much more strategic leader.

This book is a gem that every business leader and certainly every management consultant ought to have in their collection. Heavyweight management scholars talk about something that is so important to driving success in business. Business leaders often get caught up in operational effectiveness and dousing fire after fire without taking a step back and truly thinking about what forms the framework for the success of the company. This book is a collection from great minds in management and strategy.

I'm reading these texts for a leadership course and they are very interesting articles. They can be very useful for learning leadership techniques that people can use in their everyday lives but are biased towards business and organizational leadership instead of social or Civic leadership. They are still a good read to get the basic concepts of leadership such as: leadership vs management. Worth the read.

Bought as required reading for a Ph.D. program, but really think it is a good option for those not interested in research and/or a "textbook" reading experience. All of these HBR's 10 Must Reads books are reliably good for an overview of the current take on each subject (in this case, leadership).

MUST read for anyone who desires self-understanding and self-improvement. Not just for leaders (not such a great title as people may think it won't apply to everyone).If you have heard of the "fundamental attribution error" that all humans make, then this easy but brilliant read will shed the light on just how we justify it and how to get OUT of the box!!!

Used this for a Strategy and Leadership class and there were a number of great articles in it. Actually glad I have a copy to keep.

HBR's 10 Must Reads on Leadership is a collection of ten HBR essays on leadership. Every article essentially tries to answer the same question: "What are the qualities of a great leader, and how does one gain those qualities?".More specifically, the essays cover the following questions:* What does a leader need to do? ("What Makes an Effective Executive?", "What Leaders Really Do", "The Work of Leadership")* What is the ideal personality of a leader? ("What Makes a Good Leader?", "Why Should Anyone Be Led By You?", "Level 5 Leadership")* What are the various competencies of leadership and how can they be distributed across different people? ("In Praise of the Incomplete Leader", "Seven Transformations of Leadership")While reading, it's impossible not to notice the fact that while many of the articles attempt to answer same questions, they arrive at a very different conclusions. Several of the articles openly admit that while thousands of scholars have attempted to produce a cookie-cutter leadership profile, none has emerged. The article identifies the specific skills and traits needed to overcome and emerge positively from these experiences, and argues that they are the same skills and trains needed for successful leadership. "Level 5 Leadership"Jim Collins describes "level 5 leaders" (the highest level of leadership) as embodying the dualistic personality traits of personal humility and fearless professional will. While emphasizing the critical importance of "level 5 leadership", the article also describes other leadership strategies that turn good companies into great ones."Seven Transformations of Leadership"This article describes a hierarchy of leadership styles, ranging from ineffective to highly effective. Further, the man and his journal entries are then made the centerpiece of a detailed and captivating social history of the time and place in which he carried out his 361 executions, a history entirely different than what the common reader might expect. This is, in fact, what this excellent book is all about. As a lover of history, I cannot recommend this volume highly enough; it is like stepping back into another, darker, time.The story of Meister Frantz Schmidt (b. 1555, d. 1634), executioner of Nuremberg from 1578 to 1617 (after a bloody "apprenticeship" in Bamberg from 1573 to 1578) is one you will not soon forget. It is not a story for the squeamish. However, the author does not serve horror for horror's sake: the times were, in fact, horrific. Executions were carried out by garoting (rope), sword, breaking wheel (for the most violent of criminals), burning (for those considered worse than violent criminals: counterfeiters and homosexuals), and drowning. Schmidt made diary entries for each of his 361 executions, the latter ones more detailed than the earlier, as well as for the 345 "light" punishments of cutting off an ear or finger, or flogging. However, these violent events only punctuate the social history of Schmidt's life and times; not only the crimes and criminals which kept the executioner steadily employed (and, in fact, fairly wealthy) but the societal structure of crime and punishment and of the executioner's place in that society.Frantz Schmidt was a truly fascinating man who, after retirement as executioner, became a man of medicine, and who, upon his death, was given a state funeral. His diaries have been published since 1801. However, it is the expertise of a historian, the author, which gives us such an engrossing, well-rounded picture of the man and his times. One of the best books on history I have ever read.

Couldn't put the book down until I finished. The premise is startling--a man tasked with the regular torture and execution of criminals manages to preserve not only his own sanity and self-respect, but obtains some grudging measure of respect from his society. What is the secret to his success? My reading of his story was that he lived a life of integrity--he chose to act according to self-imposed rules that he believed would demonstrate respect for law and order. He chose to confront the sobering responsibilities that he was born to by becoming the most sober man in the city.This guy lived the Milgram Experiment--when authority directed him to punish in any number of horrific ways, he complied. It was a job and it appears that he didn't enjoy inflicting pain but saw his role as a necessary evil if society was to be protected. Having read this book, one appreciates the value of the rule of law. Perhaps we could not have the degree of societal respect for the rules we currently enjoy without a history of crucifixions and torture, but it is not impossible to revisit the days and times of our ancestors who dealt with the same basic problems we do and try to think of whether or not our society has truly evolved.My take on the book was that one can find success despite any obstacles that society or circumstance may impose. It takes hard work, unyielding ethics and a great deal of patience; characteristics that are as necessary in today's world as they were in the 16th century.

It's a topic that won't appeal to everyone, but it is a fascinating look into the history of the executioers occupation. It covers the apprenticeship, how they were treated by the rest of the population, ostracized and how they had their own fraternal order of professionals with annual conferences. The gentlemans journal opens a whole new perspective to the profession, which also served as Doctor and phamacist in may rural towns of the time. It also describes how sons studied under their fathers starting as early as age 10 by assissting with prepe and cleanup and by 16 were practicing with the equipment to prepare for their first event.

This book is simply amazing. I was engrossed from beginning to end. What starts out as a straightforward journal written by a teetotalling German executioner in the 16th century becomes a vibrant history demonstrating that this period was not only violent but magical.Who knew that executioners regularly practiced the healing arts? Or that the body parts of the recently dead were thought to possess medicinal benefits? Or that once an executioner, always an executioner--and your children too?Joel Harrington writes in a clear, compelling style that was a joy to read. His research is superb, and his wise conclusions about the life of Meister Frantz Schmidt and what he desperately wanted for his family are both inspiring and heartbreaking.Read this book. Although not recommended for the faint of heart, this book gives much more than graphic and gruesome accounts of 16th century German crime and criminal justice--the latter with sanctioned torture to elicit confessions, burning "witches" alive, and other forms of painful punishment and death. (Underscoring how painful and frightening were some execution methods, are accounts of prisoners throwing themselves down before the court and kissing the judges' hands in gratitude for commuting their sentence to mere beheading.) Historian Joel Harrington mines the journal of Nuremberg executioner Frantz Schmidt and other contemporary sources to paint a convincing portrait of the social class restraints, religious imperatives, superstitions, political realities, epidemics, and medical practices of a distant time and place--though in some ways revealing how little we have changed.
