About the Author

Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., is a professor of philosophy at Boston College and also at the King's College (Empire State Building), in New York City. He is a regular contributor to several Christian publications, is in wide demand as a speaker at conferences, and is the author of over 55 books. Dr. Kreeft is a convert to the Catholic Church from reformed Protestantism. He earned an A.B. degree from Calvin College, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fordham University, followed by post-doctoral work at Yale University. He has received several honors for achievements in the field of philosophy, including the Woodrow Wilson Award, Yale-Sterling Fellowship, Newman Alumni Scholarship, Danforth Asian Religions Fellowship, and a Weathersfield Homeland Foundation Fellowship.

ABSOLUTE PROS: I haven't purchased an apologetics book for over 10 years. I've read enough to know what I need to know about the trickier components of Catholic theology and have moved on to use my time in more interesting pursuits. Apologetics are incredibly important... but eventually you come to realize that "the truth will defend itself..." and you stop needing books filled with "good continuous-process-of-logically-ordered-argumentation" as Kreeft quipped.So I only bought this book because I'm a Peter Kreeft junkie and find his writing so beautiful and simple, profound and accessible.I love the book. I read it in just over an hour. I want to buy 30 copies of it and hand it off to any person with any shred of honesty who is interested in religious dialogue. The 40 reasons are as profound as "Because I need dogmatic certainty about God, and Christ and salvation" all the way down to "Because of the nouns" and "Because of cathedrals." The book is brilliant in its very simplicity. And for those well-versed in apologetics, this boils all the theological nuances (which are of little interest to the vast majority of laymen) down to extremely attractive, thought-provoking and strong bullet points that can be easily remembered and shared with people in real life and online where the attention span is severely lacking. Can't recommend it enough.SUBJECTIVE CONS: The cover is ugly; I've always disliked that image of Jesus. The title is boring and the book will be overlooked by the many who think they've 'heard it all before...' That said, I don't pretend to have a better title in mind. "I'm Catholic Because of Atheism"? Who knows...OBJECTIVE CON: And it is singular. There was no mention of the Orthodox faiths other than in passing when referencing Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Now his arguments can be applied to the Orthodox through inference (like the chapter on the Nicene Creed...) but I would've loved to see something very specific that addressed why NOT to choose Orthodox.

A little over 500 years ago in 1517 Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on church doors in Wittenberg, Germany stating, in essence, that the Catholic Church was the Whore of Babylon and the Pope the AntiChrist. Having been accused of being a prostitute, the Catholic Church responded with the Reformation, claiming that though the Church had made some mistakes, the Catholic Church had never been unfaithful to God and was a faithful wife. Now, that chivalrous Catholic philosopher Peter Kreeft has published his book, Forty Reasons I am a Catholic, defending her honor quite admirably. If a great book is defined as a book that contains profound truths and beauty told with elegant prose, then this is indeed a great book.Kreeft starts out with arguments demonstrating that Catholic theology and ethics are true and faithful to the Bible. He correctly points out that the only reason to believe anything is because it is true. The lack of truth has important consequences, as he states:“I think He would say that happiness without truth is not true happiness and therefore is not really happiness at all; and that morality without truth is not true morality and therefore is not truly morality at all.”The book goes through the arguments of atheism versus theism, showing that theism is more rational, and then demonstrating that the Catholic religion is the most in accord with reason. Atheism is called out for being a supremely stupid bet, since it is like playing Russian Roulette with your immortal soul.The main argument used by atheists to deny that God exists is the problem of evil. Many people are puzzled by God’s answer to Job in the Bible as to why God allows evil to occur. Kreeft explains:“God’s answer to Job was essentially the four words he preached to Saint Catherine: “I’m God; you’re not. The two most important principles He has given us in dealing with this great mystery are humility regarding ourselves and trust regarding Him, who is all wise, all loving and all powerful.”Next, a pantheistic conception of God, if it isn’t a person, isn’t moral and omniscient, and isn’t the type of god one could swear allegiance to.A further problem with pantheism is that the pantheist God is everything, so he would contain good and evil. Who would worship a god that is partly evil?C. S. Lewis’s “Lord, Liar or Lunatic” argument is cited as evidence that Jesus was God. Kreeft elaborates on that argument as follows:“If that’s who He really was (either liar or lunatic), then who invented the Jesus of the Gospels, who is the polar opposite of both a liar and a lunatic: honest, altruistic, passionate, wise, practical, creative, saintly and fascinating? That last adjective is the most telling one because it is impossible to imitate successfully. Once you get to know them, lunatics are never really fascinating, and neither, once they become familiar, are lying egomaniacs. Even if Jesus is totally fictional, He is the most fascinating and compelling literary figure in human history. Who invented Him? If He is fictional, who invented that new genre of realistic fantasy twenty centuries before Tolkien? A bunch of peasant Galilean fishermen?”Another argument in favor of the Catholic Church is the infallibility of the Bible. Since the Catholic Church defined the canon of Scripture, the Catholic Church would have to be infallible to create the canon of Scripture. Since many Protestants believe the Bible is infallible, then they need to believe that the compiler of the Bible was infallible, and that definer is the Catholic Church.“When Walker Percy gave “What else is there?” as his reason for being Catholic, his interlocutor continued with something like this: Why, there are plenty of alternatives to the Catholic Church: fundamentalism, Modernism, left-wing liberalism, right-wing conservatism, materialism, spiritualism, pragmatism, idealism, classicism, romanticism, epicureanism, stoicism, utilitarianism, collectivism, pantheism, polytheism, the Age of Aquarius, the New Age Movement, wicca, communism, Neo-Nazism, anarchism, secular humanism, narcissism, drugs, gangs, and the NFL.” Percy replied, “I rest my case.””“Walker Percy’s answer is biblical. When Christ taught about the Eucharist, most of His disciples left. He did not call them back and explain that they were wrong to take his words literally. Instead, He said to His disciples, “Will you also go away?” Peter replied, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.’”The Catholic Church uses solid reasoning – apologetics – to defend its theology. As the book states, reason in the Catholic sense is ‘wisdom, intelligence, intellectual intuition, insight and understanding. The Catholic concept of wisdom is a broader, truer sense of the essence of reason.”As Jesus said, “You shall know a tree by its fruits.” Many of Kreeft’s arguments examine whether the Church’s actions have been faithful to its preaching:• “The Nicene Creed identifies the Church of Christ by four marks: she is one, holy, catholic and apostolic. Only the Catholic Church fits that description.”• “She has been right about morality, buying into neither Puritan rigorism and legalism, nor modern subjectivism, relativism, pragmatism or utilitarianism.”• “Catholicism is like science: universal and objective. Protestantism is more like practical psychology: individual and subjective.”• “The Catholic Church is the greatest repository and synthesis of the wisdom of the past, and the only long-range hope for saving human civilization from spiritual and material destruction.”• Since Christians are currently engaged in a spiritual war, the courage of the Catholic Church to fight for truth and genuine morality is another reason to be a Catholic. The Church has fought against totalitarian regimes, genocides, abortion, the sexual revolution and many other evils.• “God incarnate promised that the gates of Hell would not prevail against His Church (Matthew 16:18) and I do not want them to prevail against me.”• “Because I want to believe the same things that Jesus taught and that His apostles and their successors and every single Christian in the world believed for fifteen hundred years – I want to believe the same things that all Christians believed until Protestant “reformers” started to cut branches off the tree of the Catholic Faith – truths that all Christians had believed for more than fifty generations”• “Because of my friends and my family – my spiritual family – I had once (before I became a Catholic) listed the twenty-five authors in the fields of religion, theology, spirituality, and religious philosophy whom I loved and admired the most; and only two Protestants and two Orthodox authors were among them: C.S. Lewis, Kierkegaard, Dostoyevsky, and Tolstoy. Arrayed against them were twenty-one Roman Catholics: St. Justin Martyr, St. Augustine, Boethius, St. Anselm, St. Francis, St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas, Dante, Nicholas of Cusa, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Genoa, Pascal, St. Therese of Lisieux, Blessed John Henry Newman, G. K. Chesterton, Venerable Fulton Sheen, Frank Sheed, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and Ronald Knox. All these were waving to me from the ark of the Catholic Church and asking me why I had not come aboard to be with them and share their wisdom from its source rather than ungratefully consuming it from outside. I had no answer. My body and my mind said: Jump!”• “The Bible has that, yes, but twenty thousand Protestant denominations have twenty thousand interpretations of the Bible. There are not twenty thousand truths. We need the truth, not just a truth.”If God is the author of truth and goodness, and if God doesn’t contradict himself, then truth and goodness don’t contradict themselves. So true things are usually good, and good things are usually true. So the great goodness of the Catholic Church is a strong clue that the Catholic Church is true.Another nice feature of this book is a listing of Catholic principles for politics, as follows:1. The principle of personalism (systems and things should serve persons, not vice versa)2. The principle of the right to private property3. The principle of the priority of the common good over the private good4. The principle of subsidiarity (power should be dispersed, not concentrated, both because power corrupts and because smaller societies, such as families and neighborhoods, are closer to issues and problems than larger ones)” As can be seen from the short sampling of excerpts from the book above, Forty Reasons I am a Catholic is a magnificent defense of the Catholic faith and well worth reading. I first read Kreeft as a logic student in college, and was very pleased, as a raised Protestant compelled by the Catholic Church, to find such an articulate, utterly clear, humble, and charming entry-level apologetics for Catholicism.

Peter has a way of teaching the Catholic faith that makes one yearn to know more and to dig deeper into the lives of saints as well as the cathedrals, icons, art and especially the sacraments. His approach makes me want to convince every Protestant to come home to the full richness of Catholicism.

I was immersed immediately in the sensual attraction between novice model Delia and Billionaire Fashion Icon Andrew.. That scintillating look that Andrew actually brands her on the very first time of laying his eyes on her is titillating. The story pulls me in and I'm powerless to put it down...

I really liked this short story but then again I like pretty much everything Penny writes and this book is no exception. It starts out with the heroine getting fired for a stupid reason and her best friend sends her to a job interview that the friend doesn't go on. This is where she meets the hero of the story. The book is steamy before the sex even starts. This one is not as descriptive as her last one, Deep in You. This is a story where fashion meets feisty and goes from there. There's really no angst but does have a run in with an Ex.***** I read an ARC for this review but bought a copy to support and author whose work I truly enjoy.******

Another amazing read that will have you glued too your kindle. Delia just lost her job and her best friend Fleece(Veronica) tells her about a model job with the amazing Andrew Xellum that will change her life. The minute Andrew sees Delia he knows she’s the one and want to make her his muse. Delia & Andrew have a connection that can’t be denied. Delia & Andrew are smokin hot together and there sex is HOT! Another 5 Star read by Penny that had me hooked from the start.

First time fashion model Delia and fashion designer Andrew feel the electricity from the moment they meet in this romance and so do I! Even before they get together it's very sensual and compelling. When they do finally act on all that chemistry, it is blisteringly hot! Their romance is not without a bit of drama but their response is spectacular. Awesome story. I loved it.

Good read, I don't think the title fits the story maybe billionaires masterpiece or something to that effect but it didn't deter me away. Delia had some fire and when she was out of her shell she took it and ran. Andrew was a little skittish at moments and it had me questioning if I was going to like him. I love my men in control even when things are not in control. Overall he grew on me. Characters were likable , storyline was not bad but it felt stretched. 3 stars

Penny Wylder never disappoints...this was a quick, steamy and super hot story. The chemistry between Delia and Andrew is let's just say "on fire"!! Its filled with some really hot sex and lets throw in some exhibitionism. Sit back pick up your copy and wait for there HEA!!!I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Seriously. If you are a beginner or are even an advanced user looking to refresh on the core principals of photography - get this book.After the first three chapters my photography was transformed. Don't buy another lens. Don't buy a new camera body. Buy this book first.

I had picked up a digital version of this book when I first started shooting and read it nearly cover to cover on a plane ride during a business trip. I put Bryan's tips to use as soon as the plane hit the ground and was immediately rewarded with some fine memories from the trip. That was some five years ago. When we purchased a digital camera for my girlfriend's son I immediately sought out the print version to put in the bag. He loved it and started using his camera the way it should be used - out of Program Mode!No book will create fantastic photos just by reading it. You still have to have an eye and be willing to experiment a little with what the camera can do. Bryan Peterson does an amazing job of challenging the novice photographer, getting them out of their comfort zone and thinking about the technical capabilities of these very complex pieces of equipment. I now unconsciously employ the exposure triangle whenever I'm setting up a shot whereas before I didn't really understand why some photos worked well and others didn't. Bryan's analogy of ISO settings compared to a number of construction workers or bees in a hive is a priceless gem that I have expressed several times to my photographer friends when we're out shooting.The examples provided in the book are plentiful and easily understood. An excellent read for any novice wanting to take their camera out of Auto and start taking 'real' photographs instead of snapshots.

I purchased the 3rd edition which was my first book on photography. After that, I bought many books on photography, but, did not keep them all. This was the book that never left my table. Just out of love and emotion, I purchased the 4th edition's Kindle version too. It is a keeper. If you are new to photography, you must get this book. All reviewers are already praising this book, I have nothing more to say. It is THE most important book on photography. It teaches you the very basic concept that you must carry on in your whole photography life.

I wanted to get into DSLR photography more since I will be using it more for work, but am interested in it for personal use as well. I really wanted to understand photographic techniques and really know how to set up any shot. This book did not disappoint. I found Bryan's approach and writing style unpretentious, straightforward and engaging. It really was a pleasure to read through. All of his photographic examples have a description of the exposure, as well as the settings he used. Very useful. I was pleased to learn he shoots in Manual mode most of the time. To be honest all the automatic functions of todays DSLRs can be overwhelming and sometimes difficult to get the results I want. In Manual mode (or even Aperture or Shutter priority), I have control and actually understand what I am doing. There are also plenty of useful tips as well that make this a worthwhile book that I will refer to over again.Shortly after I bought the book, I mentioned it to a friend who has been into DSLR photography for awhile, and told me he has an earlier edition and is one of the best books out there on exposure. His copy is well worn.

I purchased this book as I've always been particularly interested with low-light level photography and astrophotography. I noticed almost immediately I could take better photographs or images by bumping down an ISO level with my newly purchased Nikon D5600. I then realized I needed to learn how to use manual mode for manually choosing aperture and shutter speed for optimizing my skills, and shortly later I purchased this recently written book.PROS1) Includes at least one really good photo, if not two or three good photos at times, depicting each photo taking scenario described.2) Many photography taking scenarios described, targeting mainly using Manual mode, as the book's main theme is about using Manual mode instead of Program (Automatic) mode.3) I enjoy hearing those with experience, describing their personal recommendations based on sound reasoning. (eg. Author prefers using Center-weighted light metering, as it's a technique that has yet failed and has almost always worked. I, myself, was mainly using spot metering up until this recommendation within the book, but I still have a strong preference for spot metering due to my subjects usually causing difficult positions.)4) Author uses one or two good digital cameras (eg. Mostly Nikon D800E images with a few Nikon D3X images.), and he does thoroughly explain each scenario within generic camera terminology.CONS1) First chapter is extremely wordy! In other words, the author tends to go significantly astray, whether intending humor or reflecting needlessly upon a scenario. I do not mind one or two astray comments (or jokes) within the introduction or first chapter, or even throughout the book, but the first chapter was extremely taxing upon my free time for reading! Halfway through the book now and thankfully the (excessive) comments were kept to the first chapter!2) Does not describe how the digital camera performs light metering, until halfway through the book. Light metering becomes extremely critical when taking any photos or images of black or dark colored subjects, such as the book describes black cats. (I just happen to have a black cat, and was using him for photography imaging practice alongside the book! Other less knowledgeable people might have significant issues if they're unaware of this while reading the beginning half of the book.)3) The EBook version seems to be an EPUB file format with a size of ~10MB. Clearly after seeing the file size not disclosed by either the book publisher or the referred book vendor sites, the EPUB book format's included photo images are of very low resolution! Maybe this is because I purchased the book from Google Play, but I'm presuming all the EBook formats for this book are going to contain similar image resolution for all the formats, since the publisher is referring EBook purchases directly to the Amazon, IPad, Android specific book vendors. As I stated within this review, would be nice to have a PDF format containing much higher resolution images! (Added this #3 con and purchased the EPUB version on 2017.08.07.)TIP: As with all books containing color photographs, best to buy the book instead of an EBook version. As of yet, I do not think there is an EBook or PDF version for this book, and would only buy the PDF version if the PDF version contained all the color photographs within the print copy. Else, and somewhat self explanatory, the EBook version would be useless without any of the color photographs! On the flip, a college/university level book could likely describe all the photographs within the book, if a well explained description for each photograph were provided. It's how us older folks learned long ago, when photographs were rarely used within books or were too costly to publish!

There’s some very good bits of information buried among way too many dad jokes and useless stories about pictures he took which to be honest were mostly bad. I guess the pictures only need to demonstrate a concept, but even then what he was trying to show was often unclear since he rambles endlessly. He kept mentioning about how he would go into a subject more deeply, but the space of the book wouldn’t allow it. I would much rather have has good, hard information than be bored with stories which had no benefit. Overall, I don’t regret reading it, I guess. But I would suggest another book for more direct lessons.

This book is crap

Terrible book no great information or advice

I thought it have me a very good idea of what to expect on my trip next week.

The book had a lot of good information about the rides, hotels and restaurants, but I would have liked more information on the dining plans which of the restaurants you could use them at.

I read the book before attending and it helped provide background information. Nice that it isn't terribly bulky or overly detailed. In truth, the park is pretty well organized and easy to navigate with just the handout map and following the signs. The evening water and lights display caught me by (very pleasant ) surprise, I don't recall it being mentioned in the book and so glad that I didn't miss it.

I am still on the fence as to whether I even like this series. There were a few times I wanted to throw my iPad across the room because I got so frustrated with the way Somers and Hazard dance around damn near everything. But the mysteries still pull me in. Now I just have to figure out if I can handle reading the next one. Things are different at the end of this book, but I know it doesn’t mean that the reading will get any easier.

Ashe writes well. Exceedingly well. Brilliantly well.Hazard and Somerset have been in love since page one of the first book. They don't act on it, they don't talk about it, they don't even let themselves think about ... until it slips out, crashing through. They've always pushed it back. At one point, Hazard's explosive thoughts say please, let it be tonight. If you aren't chanting along with him, sexual tension is lost to you.The murder mystery is equally bold. Hazard and Somerset work the case relentlessly, pursuing the solution as everyone else throws up distractions. Many books promise much and end flat. This book promises much and delivers more.All that and there's a book five too.

At book four in the series our MCs are dealing with a murder investigation where they”vet been sidelined by an out of town special prosecutor. They are also dealing with the feelings for each other that they are now really having a hard time ignoring, which impacts their investigation into the murder of the sheriff.Hazard and Nico’s relationship is on the rocks...the book begins with Hazard thinking to himself that he needs to break up with him. I was delighted to read this as I haven’t liked Nico since book one. But Hazard’s lousy relationship history and his inability to communicate honestly with Somers interferes with his decision making.Somers is dealing with his rocky relationship with his wife and his continually growing feelings for Hazard but he too has an inability to communicate honestly. The old romance trope of each partner believing the other doesn’t haven’t feelings for them is really stretched taught here.Add to this a suspicious special prosecutor and a police chief who is wispy washy and a crooked cop they still can’t do anything about and a mayor they know is dirty and things snowball. The mystery is intriguing and the final reveal feels like an old British mystery. But, just like in book three it’s “but wait! There’s more!” And once again our MCs are nearly killed and once again we’re in a hospital. After four books I seriously hope the health insurance for this police department is a great plan!At the end of the book we finally get the payoff we have been waiting for since book one. (Not a spoiler if you’ve read all the book blurbs!) It’s about damn time! Watching how this progresses should be interesting. I’ve binge read this whole series so I am immediately on to book five now!

Most of what I might say would be annoyingly rife with spoilers, so I'll keep this short.The mystery is good, although ... there did seem to be more deus ex machina than typical for Ashe. Usually I can trace back through the story and see where Hazard got his information, but this time...I could only see part of it.For John-Henry and Emery, however, the pieces slowly assembling since book one are built on an exceptionally firm foundation. What I couldn't figure out was how Ashe would extend the series. And then I got into Chapter two of the sneak peek at book five...and quit. Because I don't want to know if I can't read the rest. The first page of the first chapter of the sneak peek made it clear why I would keep reading. Well done.

Gregory Ashe is a talented author—and one whose works should not be missed. As a fairly recent—but staunch—fan, I have read almost all of his books. I can strongly recommend them, seriously, but the Hazard and Somerset series is by far my favorite. Ashe’s character development is second to none. His protagonists actually step from the page and bring the reader into the narrative. His plot lines are solid and they manage to survive intact throughout the story. In other words, he possesses a mature style. This can be rare in M/M fiction. In truth, Ashe writes more like a mainline author than like an author of genre fiction. Congratulations, Greg, on an excellent offering!

Twist and twist and twist again. Ashe gives it to us, but good. At last.Cora Somerset and Nico Flores fulfill their destinies. Emery and John Henry begin to talk. Finally.Oh, there’s a very complicated murder that puts me in mind of a famous Agatha Christie mind-bender. The byzantine politics of small-city Wahredua, Missouri, a quaint little college town and sinkhole of corruption, keep us on the edge of our seat until nearly the last page. If you read carefully, it’s all there before you, but who the hell reads carefully when your heart is pounding and you’re really thinking about THEM??I should hate both Hazard and Somerset. Pretty boy of privilege, bi-in-the-closet, and his brooding, brutish ex-sissy Neanderthal. So not me, and yet…yet. Sigh.I have books 5 and 6 on my Kindle. Can’t wait to see how these two work together when they’re not in emotional strait jackets.

I am truly addicted to this series and for me this series builds with each book each one getting better the more we get to know. Every story has the boys detective work for Hazzard and Somers to work through which is highly enjoyable and the plot building layers here as well. Gregory Ashe is doing a fantastic job of intertwining relationships, town politics, mystery, deception, UST through all the books. I found this book to be my favorite yet....but I still am waiting for more. Much to uncover in this one- this is a fantastic series, for me it’s really fresh read for me

But their attraction, the absolute truth of their lifelong love is a beautiful, palpable thing that consumes the reader despite the horrific circumstances in which that love exists.I've read many books of the true accounts of holocaust survivors, seen the movies and documentaries, taken classes concentrating on this area of study. But never before have I been made to fall in love with an individual, with a couple, with a family, before I took such a horrific journey with them. To feel as though you know their strength, to get to know their life up until the moment it is stolen away, to know their helplessness in the face of something so unjust and so terrifying, it changes the way you look at the world, to see such atrocities through their eyes. This may be a fictionalized account inspired by true events, but you won't convince my heart Eva and Angelo aren't real. I tried to brace myself for this story. I really did. I knew it would be a tough read and I knew what would eventually happen. I was not prepared for the onslaught of emotions this story brought out in me. There was one point when I just sat and wept over the horrific events that the innocent victims of this senseless war endured. And in true Amy Harmon fashion, she manages to find beauty within the horror, and teaches us lessons in even the ugliest of circumstances.Amy does not get overly detailed about politics or the war, and everything was broken down into simple facts and explanations. She spared us the gory details and yet still manages to paint such a distinct portrayal of the suffering that took place during this time. The common theme within all of her books is that love and faith conquers all, and how hope and resilience can help you rise above even the most difficult of situations. I think her trademark message has never shined more brightly than it does in From Sand and Ash. Eva & Angelo’s story is one that I will never ever forget.I really hope that people give this book a chance. Even if you’re not a fan of historical fiction, the message in this book is one that we need to be reminded of. We need to remember the atrocities that happened in Europe during WW2 so that millions did not die in vain, and nothing like this will EVER happen again.
