I wouldn't call this a training manual. It might be good as a handout within a broader training class, but the material itself is very light weight. For example: Value stream mapping was 1 page with half the page taken up by a graphic without any overview of common symbology.

This is a great, SHORT overview and study guide for lean manufacturing. Kind of pricey for the length but why have 500 repetitive examples. Isn't that the antithesis of LEAN? I have read many 300 and 500 page books on lean, 5s and six sigma. Always after the first 100 pages, I ask myself why more? This keeps it short. Good job.

This is loaded with practice questions for six sigma I recommend it for instructors and students from MBB to GBThis is my LSSMBB

It helps a lot. Thank you.

helps me understand Lean in a better light.

Although we have not yet used it in employee training, I "assigned" its reading to my employer so he could start understanding the role employees play in successful Lean. I thought it was excellent for that.

This book is a great basic lean book, and training manual. Very well laid out, and clear.

Good overall outline for Lean Manufacturing training but weak on detailed content. If you are not already a "Lean" practitioner, this book is not going to be helpful in establishing employee training course detailed content.

"Remarkable and insightful... a fascinating look at the interaction of money and politics in the early years of our Republic, showing that, like much of human nature, issues of greed and corruption are not sudden creations of the modern era."―New York Journal of Books"[A] compelling account.... Cost has written an engrossing and useful book in The Price of Greatness, for it both provides an accessible (short) history of this country's beginnings and illustrates dynamics fundamental to the American model."―Washington Free Beacon"Cost's descriptions of post independence political wrangling and the first decades of the new United States are clear and easily grasped."―Publishers Weekly"Focusing on James Madison and Alexander Hamilton.... Cost offers a revealing look at how their contrastingg political philosophies shaped the new nation's domestic and foreign policies.... A well-argued examination of the nation's founding principles."―Kirkus Reviews"In his lively new book, Jay Cost continues his fascinating inquiry into the sources of American political corruption by examining Alexander Hamilton's and James Madison's divergent understandings of the Constitution and the proper balancing of liberty, republicanism, and national unity and prosperity."―Bradford Wilson, Executive Director, James Madison Program, Princeton University"Thoughtful people differ concerning why so many of today's most talented writers on American history practice their craft outside academia. Thoughtful people agree, and this book demonstrates, that Jay Cost is among those writers."―George F. Will, Washington Post columnist""Jay Cost has managed to do the unthinkable. He's written an insightful account of the principles and practices of two great founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, without savaging one or the other. This terrific book is destined to reshape our thinking about the key events of the early republic including the tragic break between Hamilton and Madison.... A must-read for those interested in a deeper understanding of two giants whose principles animate America's conflicted soul."―Stephen F. Knott, author of Alexander Hamilton and the Persistence of Myth"Jay Cost brings alive the profound dispute between Madison's republicanism and Hamilton's nationalism and helps us see why it still matters. If one were asked to name the pair of former friends turned enemies who defined the modern American republic, most would answer “Adams and Jefferson.” Jay Cost, in The Price of Greatness, makes a compelling case that the answer ought to be “Madison and Hamilton.”Just as Adams and Jefferson were the words and the music of the revolution, The Price of Greatness lays claim to those roles for Hamilton and Madison in the birth of the Republic. While the elder statesmen were ambassadors abroad, it was Madison and Hamilton who worked to create the constitution and advocated for its ratification in The Federalist Papers. But within months, as Cost presents through extensive research and accessible prose, they would be bitter rivals, engaged in a tug-of-war of world views that became the foundation for the two-party system that survives to this day.But the real insight in this book is how much they influenced each other, and the enduring power of Hamilton’s ideas – and their unfortunate side effects. As Cost demonstrates in the chapter discussing the postwar policies of Madison’s Republican party, Hamilton may have died in 1804 but his policy influence lived on. Madison, ever the pragmatist, adopted a “kinder gentler” version of Hamilton’s economic policies, spreading the largesse to a broader constituency. Due to its effectiveness the idea stuck, from the Hamiltonian “bounties” of old to the crony capitalism of the present. And even though each and every period in history has evidence of greedy and corrupt people in power exploiting the system, it is hard to argue against the benefit that the tension between the two has provided the Republic. Without these competing and contradictory views as a sort of philosophical check and balance, the Republic craters in one direction or the other and is unsustainable. The Price of Greatness is an important contribution to the scholarly work of the founding period and beyond. More importantly, it is a unique study of two of our most influential founders and the importance of their collaboration, both directly and as adversaries. Viewing them in relation to one another, as the leading minds behind each of their respective parties, gives a new perspective on much of the trials of the founding period while providing timely insight into our current national politics.

Books about the Founders often fall into two categories. First, there are the (literally) weighty biographies – comprehensive portraits in which author often identifies too much with the subject's biases. Second, there are the more general accounts, which too often become platitudinous exercises in civic mythology. Jay Cost's The Price of Greatness avoids both traps.By focusing on the changing political relationship between Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, he offers more balanced – and occasionally surprising – assessments of both men and of key events like the Compromise of 1790 (the subject of "The Room Where It Happens" in the Hamilton musical). And by focusing on the decades immediately following the adoption of the Constitution, Cost explains not only how American politics have fallen short of our ideals from the outset, but also how those failures have echoed throughout the nation's history.Cost argues that after the Revolutionary War, the central political struggle in America was to secure the principles of (small-l) liberalism, (small-r) republicanism, and nationalism. The two main authors of The Federalist Papers, Madison and Hamilton, proved great allies in the fight to adopt the Constitution because they agreed on the nationalist idea that a stronger government was needed than the Articles of Confederation provided. This alliance developed despite Madison's more republican structure for the new Constitution having prevailed over Hamilton's (which included having an American version of the House of Lords instead of a Senate). Once the new form of government was adopted, however, the two became bitter opponents over Treasury Secretary's Hamilton's proposals for a more industrial and nationalist country as opposed to Madison's more agrarian, republican vision.Cost observes that a great nation need not be a just nation, and vice versa. His analogy is that Madison believed the government should be a referee among competing interests, while Hamilton thought it should be a head coach – in which case, the star players might receive favorable treatment.Hamilton's plans sought to favor the financial and industrial sectors, believing he could invest them in unifying and strengthening the country in the long term. Madison believed that Hamilton's approach would inevitably corrupt the fledgling government. Both men had a point, but rushed to believe the other was acting from more selfish, impure motives (some things in politics never change). Such was the birth of party politics in America. Before Madison became president, his concerns were partially validated. The speculation over titles in Western lands and shares in the First Bank of the United States were rife with corrupt speculation. But the operation of the bank did not live down to Madison's worst fears. Moreover, the expiration of the Bank's charter would prove an enormous headache for Madison during the War of 1812 .Ironically, afer the war, Madison and the Republicans tried to promote their republican goals with Hamiltonian means, including chartering the Second Bank of the United States and adopting protective tariffs. While the Second Bank supported a decade of prosperity, it fell prey to the sorts of corruption Madison feared regarding the First Bank. Moreover, the politics of the tariffs devolved into the "faction of the majority" warned against in The Federalist Papers. This mode of politics foreshadowed all manner of future corruption, from the creation of the national railroad to the power of the industrial trusts. In the 20th century, Progressives would campaign against these corruptions, while advocating the very formula that produced them. And so it goes. The Price of Greatness, then, is the story of how Madisonian republicanism prevailed in establishing a structure for the government, but Hamiltonian nationalism has prevailed when it is time to make public policy – and that our inability to ever fully harmonize these principles has haunted our history to this day. Cost, the author of A Republic No More and Spoiled Rotten, has become well-versed in the history of American political corruption.Cost's triumph here is in framing seemingly arcane political fights and scandals within these larger, enduring political themes, bringing the stakes to life for a modern readership. It is an unstuffy, engaging read – and at just over 200 pages, one easy to turn into a binge. If the book has a flaw, it is that Cost occasionally assumes we remember more from our history classes than we might, though never so much as to confuse the reader. It otherwise illuminates a particular slice of American history well, while explaining its current relevance. A must-read for fans of both Hamilton and Madison, as well as students of American political theory.

I liked this book, because the author explained in English, a lot of technical matter. Also, his perspective was refreshing.

An impressive dive into the personalities that shaped and formed our system of government. In light of today's political wrangling, it shows what flexibility can gain and what the price of dogmatism can cost. In the words of someone else, "History does not repeat. It echos."

Good read, It shows how some of today's issues have been around from the beginning

It may not be written in the most riveting prose, but the topic is fascinating and Jay does an excellent job breaking down the progression of his argument. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the founding generation.

Good read that attempts to take a deeper look, from a policy perspective, of the differing views between Madison and Hamilton.

Learned another series of facts about how we became who,we are and how easily we could have lost it all.

I like this book but for different reasons then "omg it's so great"...I like it because it provides a positive primer while not going to such detail that some theoretical person can read it nodding their head all the time.As a Primer, I would award this 5 stars but as a shelf resource I would give this 3.5 (hence the 4 start rating. I have noticed that the wording is not well edited and thus you have to re-read and fact check certain paragraphs. The code relies on you knowing and understanding libraries well. If you do not, get ready for some homework (which lets face it, you are programming an AVR, you HAVE TO KNOW libraries. You will also be required to understand AVR register programming such as the book does not teach well. Reference datasheets for the chip you are using. Ex: [search for the Atmel 328P COMPLETE datasheet (not the summary) on google] Also,...The book is consistently inconsistent. The author even notes in a few places that this is done on purpose to force a reader into studying outside material. Google comes in handy here and it is not a deal breaker. Again, Elliot is pushing you to use the internet instead of spoon feeding you literally everything. If you have determination and staying power and know how to work through these types of books and speedbumps found there-in, then go get it. If you are looking for a primer that will introduce you to the lingo and various use subjects, go get it. If you expect this to be a single source reference, think again!

If you are past the beginner stages with Arduino and want to play closer to the hardware, or work with Atmel's AVR family chips stand-alone on a breadboard rather than in an Arduino, this is the book for you! Unlike another book I got for that purpose, this one is well written, easy to follow, and appears to have actually been written and edited by competent folks. I've found very few typos, and none that interfered with understanding. The concepts are well explained and presented in a rational order. This may be heavy going if you've never programmed a microcontroller, don't know what a register is, or aren't familiar with binary math or Boolean logic, but the book does explain these to an extent if you haven't run into them before. You'll want the AVR data sheet for reference too (free download, link in the book)...the book has the info required for the projects described, but being able to put that in context with the rest of the processor description is useful...especially if you want to try things not explicitly covered in the book.

I have read the reviews on this book and have seen a variation of opinions. What seems to drive the rating is how well the reader’s expectation of the book matched the experience. I love this book and give it 5 stars because of how I use the book; my expectation and my experience was a match. Make sure you have the proper expectation and you will be happy with this book.Let me start by saying it is my opinion that this book is not for the beginner. If you do not have programming experience, or you have not experimented with electronic circuits or you do not know C this book is not for you (yet). Start with a simple Arduino Uno, buy a kit and get a beginner’s books. I highly recommend books by Simon Monk.I have been coding for 25 years and have been experimenting with electronics since I was eight. I am a hobbyist maker and have written many blogs. I have also written many libraries for a variety of devices and sensors.I have come across the need to have a more finite control over the microcontroller and have more control of performance and timing. If you are familiar enough with the Arduino environment you know that it is suitable for 98% (I made that statistic up but think it is accurate) of the needs makers will come across. But I have come across devices that have such precise timing requirements that I needed to fine tune my code. That’s where this book comes in. I read the datasheets for just about everything I buy. I love to understand every detail of every sensor and microcontroller. Sometimes you uncover “hidden secrets” that you exploit to make your solution exciting and fun. However, this book presents many useful facts about the AVR microcontrollers without the need to dig through the datasheet. The book has given be a much better understanding of the AVR microcontroller as well as added some very useful tools to my bench to solve more complex problems and to write better libraries.I recommend this book to anyone with a medium to advanced level of understanding of AVR programming using the Arduino environment. This book will take your understanding to a much deeper and more advanced level.

What can I say? Here is another Walt Wangerin book to entertain and inspire. Wangerin is a pastor, who has ministered in many congregations, including black churches. This book, lovingly tells of some of those people and experiences. You can hear his wonderful voice in each story-telling page. The title is only one sweet story and that story is about his young daughter and her realization of what Christmas is truly about. Read it to find out it isn't the usual Christmas answer. This book, like most of Wangerin's books (I didn't say "all" as I'm not particularly taken with his young children's books), is written to hit the place down deep in your heart. I HIGHLY recommend!

I had read a Lenten book by Wangerin. When I wanted to read something involving Advent, I chose The Manger is Empty. The author writes many diverse stories. All of them present stories to make you think. The book is well written and kept my interest throughout the whole book. I highly recommend it.

It is very good to read but funny. I leaned this book to my sister. I hope so she likes it.

Everything I had hoped!

This little book, while short is very meaningful. We used it as a devotional kind of book during Advent. We made our own divisions and applied it to our situation. It added some new insights to our preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Endearing story charmingly told. It was recommended by a friend who read it years ago. I was pleased with my copy.

Love it

I hate these kinds of reviews, but it is hard to review when another book arrives and it is an out of print title.

Old Testament Wisdom Literature: A Theological Introduction, by Craig G. Bartholomew Ryan P. O'Dowd

Book Description

"Clear, accessible and insightful. Bartholomew and O'Dowd have teamed up to produce an introduction to the theology of wisdom that will not only inform the readers' minds but encourage their spiritual development as well. Great for classroom use." (Tremper Longman, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College)"For an introductory level book, there are rich pickings to be found in Old Testament Wisdom Literature! The tone of the book is accessible enough to make it an appealing and stimulating experience for any 'reading Christian,' but there are also depths here to engage even the most seasoned student of the Old Testament's Wisdom literature. The key to this book's success is in its title--it is truly a theological introduction, and this sets it apart from other introductory volumes to the Wisdom literature. Careful explanation of critical issues regarding Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes is followed by close readings of specific texts and consideration of their lasting theological significance. And the concluding chapters on Jesus as the Wisdom of God, and the theology of the Wisdom literature both in the original and in today's context are, quite simply, masterful. If you want to 'get wisdom' (Proverbs 4:5), then this book will be a tremendously helpful companion for the journey." (Jamie Grant, vice principal, Highland Theological College)"Be not misled: this is much more than a theological introduction to the Old Testament wisdom books. It is a wide-ranging survey of their significance against their ancient Middle Eastern background and in the context of modern study. It stresses and explicates their poetic nature, and it makes illuminating links with modern and postmodern thinking." (John Goldingay, Fuller Theological Seminary)"Craig Bartholomew and Ryan O'Dowd have given the church a theology of Wisdom literature that is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Its apples of gold are its profound, penetrating and accurate insights into Old Testament wisdom. These are set in the silver settings of discerning evaluations, an engaging style, and the best of ancient and modern scholarship." (Bruce Waltke, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Regent College, and Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, Knox Theological Seminary)

A theological account of the Old Testament's Wisdom Literature is much needed in our time, and the authors have done a remarkable good rendering of such a theology for us. With a range and scope, with a host of good insights for our culture's suffering from fragmentation and alienation may be read upon the pages of this book. Especially enjoyable is their concerns for Poetry and the Arts in our times, times when because of all the split cultures produced by our post-modern historical critical methods with analytical methods of interpretation of 'things', we find it difficult to integrate 'things' into a practical and theoretical wholeness the Wisdom of which we may grasp for our times. This account is well worth reading by theological and science students today.Rev. John E. McKenna

For a graduate class.

This book came as expected.

Love it.

Old Testament Wisdom Literature: A Theological Introduction by Craig G. Bartholomew and Ryan P. O’Dowd is a clear and accessible introduction to wisdom literature with a unique focus upon the theological contribution of the Old Testament books. The goal of the book is to open a conversation amongst readers towards an embrace and embodiment of the theology of the Old Testament wisdom literature today (p. 16). This is accomplished through rigorous engagement with the biblical text and interaction with both ancient and modern scholarship.Bartholomew and O’Dowd divide the focus of the book into three sections. Chapters 1-3 are an establishment of the context for the book, including an introduction to wisdom literature as wisdom, a survey of the world of ancient (i.e. Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, etc.), and the genre of poetry. These three chapters do well to achieve what they set out to accomplish, and everything else is captured in the recommended readings at the end of each chapter. Chapters 4-9 comprise the heart of the book and walk the reader through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, offering a theological interpretation of each book, an overview of the reception of each book, and interaction with the biblical text throughout. Chapters 9-12 move the discussion towards a more fuller theology of the wisdom literature for today and examine the use of wisdom and wisdom literature in the New Testament. There is much to be praised about this volume. First, and probably foremost, Bartholomew and O’Dowd do an excellent job establishing the books in the ancient Near Eastern context. This allows the scope of the book to move beyond a typical introduction as the theological and hermeneutical considerations are developed. Second, each chapter concludes with a curated “recommended reading” section. This makes the book perfect for interested readers looking to adventure out on topics. That said, there are also several resources I anticipated to find as recommended reads, and when I looked I came up with nothing. Of course, this is minor in the scope of what Bartholomew and O’Dowd have accomplished. Lastly, while the wisdom literature of the Old Testament typically moves beyond the books explicitly covered in the volume, the introduction to wisdom and the ensuing literature does well to orient the reader with the necessary tools to accomplish the task of interpretation.Old Testament Wisdom Literature: A Theological Introduction by Craig G. Bartholomew and Ryan P. O’Dowd is a clear and accessible introduction to wisdom literature with a unique focus upon the theological contribution of the Old Testament books. It is well situated for a classroom and even better situated for the interested reader. Those looking for a solid introduction to the wisdom literature of the Old Testament that will pay dividends in the end, will do well to consult Bartholomew and O’Dowd.

You can read the fuller review at SpoiledMilks (6/5/18).Many 21st century Westerners have lost the wonder of creation. Christians are saved through the blood of christ, what do we need to understand about the world? What does the Bible have to say about wisdom? Can pithy poetics really form character? In their new book Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Craig Bartholomew and Ryan O'Dowd present a theological introduction to the Bible's wisdom books—Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. How can one expect to find wisdom, and how can 21st century Christians apply 3,000-year-old Old Testament wisdom to their lives?SummaryChapters 1-3 bring us into (1) Israel's world of wisdom—they believed that they were in covenant with the one God who created all of reality and who was the source of knowledge. As Job expresses, they knew their knowledge was limited. The authors then tour through Egyptian and Mesopotamian wisdom to show Israel’s context. Chapter 3 makes a plea for poetry, which "gives us a nuanced understanding of people, language and culture" (51). Stating a mere proposition such as "God is omnipotent" is very different than "declaring that God rules 'the raging sea'" or that he can "draw in Leviathan with a hook" (69). Poetry brings imagery to the stories which make up our life. At 160 pages, Chapters 4-9 make up the core of the book. The authors spend two chapters on each of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. In the first chapter on each book, rather than rehearsing the main gist of each book, they describe the book's theological function. Each book's second chapter ("Chapter B" as I call it) explores a particular theme in that book.Sometimes the text's form is just as important as what it says. The proverbs in Proverbs 10-30 come to us at random, just as these instances occur within life. Job and Ecclesiastes "focus on profound experiences of apparent contradictions to the character-consequence theme," which deepen our faith and our wisdom and form our character (285). The authors note, "Ecclesiastes is performatively enigmatic, just like suffering, and Job is long, at times tedious, with all those speeches, just like suffering" (318).Ecclesiastes "ultimately affirms life and joy... but only as the end result of a ferocious struggle with the brokenness of life" (189). Job presents bodily suffering; Ecclesiastes presents mental anguish. It's not enough to have a high IQ. Job had money. Qohelet asked difficult philosophical questions. But wisdom requires us to admit our finite creatureliness before the infinite Creator. We, like the woman in Proverbs 31, can embody wisdom and image God.Chapters 10 looks at wisdom in the NT through the coming of Jesus. Chapter 11 gives an OT theology of wisdom. Chapter 12 applies wisdom to our present life concerning education, politics, spirituality, the ordinary, and the dark night of the soul.Recommended?I greatly appreciated Bartholomew and O'Dowd's theological interpretation. The authors look at the meaning of the texts and what is really going on. Teacher and pastors would do well to read this book. Hopefully more people will grasp the importance of these important, often ignored Old Testament books. Disclosure: I received these books free from IVP Academic. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255

#30,706 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have been unemployed for over a year and have been on numerous interviews that I thought went well...but no offers came in. Last month I had 2 interviews in the same week and really wanted - and needed - an offer. I read this book and really listened to what Russell said. WOW!! I got an offer from each employer and I got to pick which job I really wanted. I start in 2 weeks. Amen!

I work in a career center and there are points made in this book that other books of much longer length and very pricey just don't seem to touch on. This should be in everyones library to read at least a few days before the interview so you can really digest some of the wisdom that the author is shares. Some points that I really like - "This is about what you can do for my team and my company." Sounds simple, right? But how many times do people go on and on about what they are looking for in a company or what their needs are. The hiring manager doesn't want to hear your problems - they want to hear the reasons why you should be chosen over everyone else. The other thing that hits home is the point that the "interview starts when you get out of your car." Treating the receptionist in an unprofessional manner might doom you before you even start! The bulk of the book covers a few different questions with examples of good responses, poor responses, and what to do if you having something negative in your past that needs to be addressed. This is done for each question!!One of the best sections is the insight as to "Why" the question is being asked in the first place.Tuckerton gives sage advice and really tries to change the paradigm of the reader. You need to think like a hiring manager when you go for an interview, not an interviewee!Thank you very much for this wonderful resource!

I read this in 30 minutes. I have a few other such books written by recruiters. They are filled with "steps," acronyms, etc, too much info, too wordy. Your book was helpful to me because I do tend to ramble, and often have felt, yes I am good on paper, but the actual interview flops. After reading your book I now realize my mistakes and am energized on what things I will now do differently.

Downloaded and read in about half an hour. As a manager that often conducts interviews and ultimately performs the hiring, I wanted to see if the experiences presented aligned with mine. I was looking to see if I could benefit from the information and conduct better interviews. In a nutshell, it was a concise echo of all that I have seen and experienced myself over the last several years. For all the people I pass up, I wish I could give them a copy of this book for their next interview--they certainly would perform much better if they took these suggestions to heart.

Absolutely worth it’s weight in gold. It gave me all the answers to (or at least gave me ways to craft the answers to) the specific, most important interview questions. These were all the answers I had had in my head but just hadn’t been able to articulate well. I know studying these which will get my confidence up will make all the difference. Great buy and hopefully all I need.

Funny but there is nothing new contained in this book. Free Internet job sites are more helpful. I don't know where this author lives but apparently not in mainstream America. I know that reviews can be purchased and should have not purchased the book based on the good reviews and title. Lesson learned.

I listened to the audio version of this title three times while preparing for a job interview. I found it very helpful in preparing for the interview. No, I didn't get the job but that wasn't the end of the world, either.

I purchased the audio version and took almost 6 pages of notes from this book. It was so informative and I will definitely use the advice given in this book. You will not be disappointed in purchasing this.
