So it is a pleasure to find this new release for very young children relating a specific incident in the life of young Golda Meir. Many little girls will find a kindred spirit in the story of Golda Mabowehz, a take-charge kind of kid (read: bossy; but that's OK, considering her later career) who sees a need in her community and decides to fix it. In this case, author Barbara Krasner embellishes the true story of the American Young Sisters Society, a group of Jewish immigrant girls formed by 9-year-old Goldie, who naturally appoints herself president. She explains to the group that they are there to do something about the problem of kids in their school who do not have enough money to buy textbooks. They each need to raise 3 cents a week - a nearly impossible sum - the same price as a loaf of bread or a quart of milk. Goldie ingeniously comes up with a plan to add a 2-cent surcharge on groceries purchased by the patrons of her mother's grocery store while mother is gone; but this backfires when customers object. Goldie masterminds another plan, this time more ambitious: She will secure a large hall and invite important people to a public meeting where she, a 9-year-old fourth-grader, will give a speech persuasive enough to secure funding for the cause. 'Education is the only way to lift ourselves out of poverty . . . I ask each of you to look into your hearts and wallets and give what you can.' Krasner states in her afterword that this incident in Meir's life is true and was written about in The Milwaukee Journal of Sept. 2, 1909. She publishes the popular blog, The Whole Megillah: The Writer’s Resource for Jewish-Themed Story. She runs workshops and conferences for Jewish writers at the Highlights Foundation and in conjunction with the Association of Jewish Libraries. Barbara has a B.A. in German from Douglass College, an M.B.A.in Marketing from the Rutgers Business School and an M.F.A. in Writing for Children & Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. I thoroughly enjoyed the book GOLDIE TAKES A STAND. The story is informational and very interesting. I think it will be good for children to learn about the early life of Golda Meir. I especially liked the illustrations. The costumes of the children are so cute and I loved the expressions of the children's faces. The household decorations remind me of my grandma's house. This book is a perfect read-aloud to introduce kids to Golda Meir. My 2nd graders were completely engrossed in the story.

Goldie Mabowehz was a nine-year-old girl who was the president of the “American Young Sisters Society.†Of course being self-appointed worked very well for Goldie. Very well indeed and all the other girls clustered around her would probably agree, including her little sister Clara and her best friend Regina. There were problems to be solved and Goldie was just the girl to get things done. The problem was textbooks. “The kids in our school didn’t have enough money to buy them,†she explained to the Sisters.Many of the kids like Hymie had tattered ones and that annoying Jennie leaned over her desk to peek at Frieda’s. Goldie figured out the math and if all the members could bring in a whole “three cents a week,†that would do it. Now that was enough to buy either a loaf of bread or a quart of milk so that was a lot! Goldie was going to work in Mama’s store to get her share and would charge everyone a little extra. Mrs. Garfinkel was none to happy when Goldie asked extra for those eggs. Stomp, stomp! Out the door she went. Not a penny more from her.Things weren’t looking up for the American Young Sisters Society because no one managed to raise that three cents. Goldie put her pointer finger to her chin and began to think. “We’ll hold a public meeting, a fundraising gala,†she told the girls, “and collect from everyone at one time.†They began to make posters, Frieda was going to do the invitations, and Lillian would create a “list of important people.†Sarah was wondering just where the big event could be held. Goldie was a big thinker, but could she think big enough to get those textbooks?This is a charming story about Goldie that will delight young readers. Of course Goldie Mabowehz is none other than Golda Meir. Even as a young girl she had great leadership qualities. This fictionalized tale, based on real events, had a great flow and will draw in even the most reluctant readers. Goldie’s generosity and empathy toward others will resonate with the young reader. The artwork, a mix of gouache and collage, had a nice period feel. Will people show up and care for the cause, or will the group have to keep trying to raise funds?The events in this book about Goldie Mabowehz (Golda Meir) are true, although the dialogue is imagined. I like that this story was created for young minds to learn about her life. I believe leading the American Young Sisters Society planted a seed for Goldie to do other things with her life, eventually becoming the Prime minister of Israel.
