He knows all the techniques and skills of the broadcasting business, overcoming the great flaw in radio performance that you are totally cut off from your audience and know not whether the people appreciate what you are saying, have turned the dial or gone to sleep.In that respect radio is the most difficult medium for a performer, even more than motion pictures where everything is planned to the last second and retakes are a regular part of the process. In radio it is one shot and you have to have your act together pretty well to pull it off. Barry Farber shows you a path to that goal.

Barry Farber is a well known radio host who has interviewed some of the most important people in America and this book is his "self-help" book on how to make people talk. Like many other conversation books, this one is about (mostly) speaking to people you do not know very well. I know that the book is about Peter the Great, but it would have been nice to get a better view of how his subjects fared under his rule. If all you're looking for is an account of the life and times of Peter the Great, this seems to be a pretty thorough work. From my point of view, it left out some pretty important stuff. If you were a subject of his who happened to come into close contact with him, this book may do a fair job of detailing the kind of experience you might likely expect to have had. But it provides no good understanding of what life might have been like for the millions of Russians who didn't fall into that category. I don't know that such an account exists, perhaps that is too much to ask for.Overall, it is a good read. There is always a problem in determining the validity of accounts about people who lived in the 17th century. Though the written language was becoming more common, education was still somewhat limited to the wealthier classes of society. Accordingly, the things that were considered fitting topics for written record were determined by a different standard. In discussing militaristic exploits, there might be a tendency to flavor the account in a way more flattering to the victor. This is especially true if the victor is a despot who could end the author's life at will. In discussing attributes of a ruler, the tale may be dictated more by the times in which that ruler lived. Among the ancient despots, it was probably more important that subjects feared retribution so that rebellion was less likely. This would likely have been the case here. Although, we do get accounts in this writing of a ruler who had an intellectual curiosity about the things around him that caused him to want to know everything he could, Peter's temper and vicious treatment towards detractors receives more detailed emphasis.While Jacob Abbott clearly had nothing to fear from Peter, the accounts he had to work from were written by people who possibly did have either something to fear or an ax to grind. Peter didn't seem the kind to engender a lot of affection. If nothing else, it would seem that most of the popular accounts/myths have been adequately preserved and a portrait of a despot has become cemented just a bit more completely.

Disclaimer ... I'm not even halfway through yet, but I can't put the book down. When I downloaded, I wasn't aware that it was first published in the early 20th century. From that standpoint, it is very easy to read. I assumed it wouldn't be...Not knowing anything about Peter the Great, I am enjoying this book. And I will probably purchase another one about him to get another perspective from another source. But, this is a good read ... in my opinion.

Really an amazing story. One of my favorites by Abbott. I use to love fiction adventures, but history is more amazing, because this really happened and it tells us how we arrived where were are today. (You can be sure Putin know's this story).Abbott's books are easy reads, written at the same level as a summer novel, and just as captivating. If you are a fan of "Game of Thrones," you will probably be impressed with Peter bring Catharine for a stroll to a public square in Moscow to meet up with De la Croix. The founding of St. Petersburg is another epic tale proving truth is stranger than fiction.

I get the sense there could've been much more to this.If you want to know about the relationship Peter had with his sister and oldest son, this is the book for you.

I got this book because we were going to take a River Cruise from St.Petersburg to Moscow and I wanted to find out more about Peter the Great. I now realize why they called him "the Great". He was a very fascinating individual. Like most rulers of his day, he was brutally ruthless, but he was also very smart and not afraid of doing the hard things himself. He was a great visionary and moved Russia into the modern times.

Yes, Jacob Abbott books are written towards children, but I like that about him. Not knowing really anything about Peter, it was a good way to start learning about him. He talks about the era as well to help you understand some of Peter's actions. Morals are also touched upon, so when Peter does something good, it is noted and when he does something bad, that is noted as well. Very wholesome read, even during the war years.

This is a LARGE PRINT addition. No mention of that is made in the description.More importantly, the "reprint" can be best described as a photocopy of some student's (?) old manuscript. There are what appear to be pencil underlinings all over the place, with a couple of notes in the margins! Somehow that's just cheesy. Seriously, this could have been fixed up easily with a scanner.OK, that said, the narrative of the book is quite good. It is a compelling story that holds the Reader's interest at all times.

For years I taught a course at the University of Vermont entitled " America in the Jazz Age: A History of the Roaring Twenties" and if this "Drinkable Feast" had been around at the time--I would have gladly used it in the course.The book is so well written and just "hopping" with anecdotes of the famous and the decadent of the period--including Ezra Pound, Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and Alice B. Toklas; Ernest Hemingway; (Ernest and Hadley); the Fitzgeralds, Peggy Guggenheim; Shakespeare and Company etc...the list is endless and it is buttressed by the varioushotels and bars and the drinks that they were serving at the time or rather what was in fashion and when--along with the recipes and their different variations.Some time is also spent with the expats' various eccentric members and why and where they were in Paris and France...along with all this one also meets the various famous bartenders at the various bars such as Harrys, the Ritz, Les Deux Maggots; Le Dome etc...I could not put this book down and would glady recommend it to anyone...Bravo to you Phillip Greene...and thank you very much...Prof. Rene Vallee,Grand Isle, Vermont 05458

The literary and arts scenes of 1920s Paris come to life through period photos and advertisements and Philip Greene’s vivid, engaging storytelling. This is narrative nonfiction at its best. Great gift for cocktail enthusiasts or history/arts buffs alike.

I am a graduate student who studies perceptual systems. My research interests are neuroscience, vision, statistics, classification, and machine learning.I recently discovered that kernel methods are valuable tools for solving classification problems in a nearly optimal way. Apparently they are also useful for regression.This is the third textbook that I purchased for the purpose of understanding kernel methods. I have scarcely encountered a more elegantly written text. It does a superb job of building intuition and is also mathematically rigorous. Such texts are rare.This is the first textbook that I rely on when it comes to kernel methods.

I never write reviews, but I was so impressed with this book that I couldn't keep quiet. It is a practical book with code examples so that you can really see what he is talking about. This is book is just at my level of math (being able to read matrix equation without counting fingers and toes). Some Hilbert spaces but not more theory than you need. The book separates the design of kernels from the design algorithms that use kernels (nice touch). I would have liked more practical examples or a game plan for designing kernels for specific tasks.I also have the book Learning with Kernels, (Scholkopf and Smola) but I found it harder to follow and fragmented in their presentation.

This book will, without doubt, become THE reference work in kernel methods for pattern recognition, and a must read for pattern recognition researchers and practitioners in general.It's built up in a nicely modular, accessible and didactive way, helping the reader understand thoroughly what kernel methods are all about and importantly, how to use them. This makes the book very useful as a cook book for practitioners, as well as a text book for students.The book covers all the relevant topics in the state of the art of kernel methods, a field of research in which the authors have been a driving force since the beginning. Even so, they managed to resist the temptation from squeezing in the(ir) latest (potentially still unstable) results, which greatly enhances the timelessness of the book.

Well, at first I was petrified to find a book that sounded like it deeply explores the subject of kernel methods. But all in all, it did not quite achieve what I hoped for. As a practical approach, when it comes to implementation, it serves nicely as a reference. The deeper mathematical roots of kernels (especially when it comes to measure theory and functional analysis) are not dealt with at all or just scratched at the very surface. The notation is sometimes awkward, mentioning for example the representation of an object in a given vector space with respect to the basis. And: Too much copied and pasted from the former book about SVMs. Basically, reading papers of Carmeli, Aronszajn and others will give you a much deeper insight into the subject.

This work presents a coherent overview of an important field in machine learning. The unifying framework of kernel methods has proven state of the art results and the community has been waiting for a book like this to make both theory and practice of kernel methods accesssible for readers of all different backgrounds (researchers, students, practioners from both academia and industry, ...).It is theoretically well-founded, the resulting algorithms are well-explained and made accessible for practioners by providing pseudo-code and online, ready-to-use matlab code.This book nicely complements the previous, yellow book, written by the same authors. Indeed, after "getting into the field" by reading the accessible introduction to support vector machines (SVMs), it was clear to me that SVMs was only an example of a signifcantly larger framework, i.e., kernel methods. The blue book is the reference book about that larger framework I have been waiting for since then. I particularly like the way the book is set up, making clear the modular, flexible approach in kernel methods.

A very useful book and quite a nice read. I bought the book after reading a few chapters. Even now, an year after my grad school, I still read this. A good reference.Nice print, no mistakes, MATLAB code. You get everything on Kernel Methods, from theory to implementation. A perfect book and helped me a lot in my research.

The book is divided into 3 parts. The theory is all in part I,the rest of the book is a cook-book with plenty of matlab code.The website contains most of the same code + data online. Readable, complete.

Sloppy language, sloppy definitions, sloppy proofs.Constant repetitions do not add any clarity either.
