Shenandoah was a prosperous coal mining town in Schuylkill County, PA. 30,000 people lived within one square mile surrounded by coal mining collieries. Plenty of bars too! The town was settled by immigrants from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Italy, etc. Nationalities lived in their own part of town and went to their own churches. Nearly all the men and boys worked hard in the coal mines. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the coal region and a great companion to Andy Ulicny's book My Shenandoah 1966.
Since my Mom's family is from Shenandoah, I wanted to get this book. My Grandfather came from the Ukraine at the turn of the 1900's. Like most he worked in the mines and died as a result of it from Black Lung. A good historical journey of the borough and the people. Some of it I've seen in other sources but the author has complied it here. Lot's of photos. Something nice to share with your family and pass it down so that they hopefully can see the sacrifices of their ancestors and how life was in that era.
It was a gift and they liked it.
Some of my family is from Shenandoah and we are excited to see a picture of my great grandfather in the book!
