one of the top ten superman stories of all time, this bittersweet farewell to the silver age superman, is one of Alan moores greatest tales. i dare any superman fan to read it and not get choked up.
"Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" was a 2 part comic book published in 1986. It was a way to wrap up the Superman character before DC Comics rebooted their entire universe with the Crisis on Infinite Earths event that attempted to consolidate and simplify their confusing multiple-worlds plotlines.I read part 1 when I was a kid. The idea of the Superman I knew and loved being somehow erased was deeply upsetting to me. Curt Swan's art was familiar as always, but Alan Moore's script was ... different. Disturbing. Lois Lane is the point of view character, trying to determine what happened to Superman after his disappearance from the public eye years earlier. In a sense, part 1 was kinda depressing and intimidating ... almost like a death in the family to me (not to cheapen real-world deaths, but a lot of my mental energy at that age was wrapped up in comics.) Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger, and I was too intimidated to track down Part 2.Reading these stories as an adult was a different experience, and I was finally able to read Part 2 -- which ended on a completely different note than the gloomy Part 1. A fun trip down nostalgia lane for me.
These being stories written by Alan Moore, there isn't anything particularly wrong with them. They have action, they have awesome one-liners, they have heartwarming, tear-inducing moments of emotion, and they have great artwork. Basically everything I wanted out of this story. The only real issue someone might have is that these are heavily tied into the DC universe. Let me explain; The Killing Joke is another one-off story by Alan Moore that gets a lot of praise. With that story, you only need a basic rudimentary knowledge of who the characters are for the story to work. With Man of Tomorrow, you do need to know who everyone is and how they relate to superman, or your going to be confused at times. This criticism may be a bit unfair, since nothing here was ever intended to stand on it's own, but I want to be clear that you need a more-than-average knowledge of superman to appreciate this collection.EDIT:I recently found another product on amazon called 'the DC Universe by Alan Moore'. It's supposed to contains all the stories contained here, plus a few green arrow and green lantern ones, as well as Moore's work on Voodoo and WildCats. Reviews are pretty harsh on it, but that's because it was supposed to have the Killing Joke and didn't. It's not that much more expensive, so you might want to check that out instead of this colllection.
If you love Superman you owe it to yourself to get this book and read these iconic Superman stories by comic book mystic extraordinaire Alan Moore. "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?" is a timeless story, Moore alongside the definitive Superman artist Curt Swan managed to create a poignant but hopeful sendoff to the Silver Age Man of Steel. In addition to this, the book includes the amazing "For The Man Who Has Everything", one of my all-time favorite Superman stories that every self-respecting fan needs to read at some point in their lives. It's Supes' birthday so what do you get for the man who has everything? How about the life he never got to enjoy as Kal-El in his home planet of Krypton. As he fulfills his wish to lead the normal life he never got to live, thanks to the illusion created by the mysterious "Black Mercy" plant embedded in his chest, his friends Batman, Wonder Woman and Robin try to save him (and themselves) from the evil Mongul! These stories from the mid-eighties have aged wonderfully despite being over thirty years old, you won't regret getting this book!
This is a great collection of Superman stories, and the main story is a fitting final story for all intents and purposes, of the original Superman character. It is a well told summation of every Superman story and all the characters that had ever been told from 1938-1986. Some might argue that every story from 1938-1956/7 were of Earth 2 Superman and after that they were about Earth 1 Superman but having read many of the old comic book stories from 1938 on up to 1986 in this case, you don't really get the sense when reading straight thru from the start to the finish that there was any sort of break per say in the stories, setting or characters involved. The main comics I'm referring to are Action Comics, Superman and Adventure Comics which told the tales of Superman when he was Superboy along with the old Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen comic books. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow tells the final story of Superman and all his friends and enemies and the way they were portrayed from 1938-1986 which is why the multi-earth argument doesn't particularly matter nor hold water so to speak because it all seemed to portray one linear story and characters therein. It doesn't appear that the stories from 1938-1986 were of two different Earths and Supermans but in fact one and only one, but opinions might vary, to each their own. If you had been reading the comics and enjoying them for what they are and not overly complicating things for yourself it is a very great final story of the original Superman. Alan Moore did a good job writing a story with respect to everything that had been done up to this point in time, and the art work was very good, I liked the Curt Swan/ George Perez art team the best but the Curt Swan/ Kurt Schaffenberger team was reminiscent of late 50's early 60's Superman comics artwork and it was still good, I just preferred the former a bit better but the latter is good too. No complaints. If you've read all the old Superman comics listed above and haven't read this particular one you will enjoy it but all Superman fans and comic book fans in general, will enjoy reading this well written and illustrated final Superman story. You can't go wrong with this one.
