I ordered the 10th edition of, Sunshine on My Face, because it didn't mention dementia or anything related to memory difficulties on the cover. However, to my surprise, inside the 1st few pages of the book it mentions memory difficulties etc. in several places as well as on the back cover. I will return the book as my 85y/o mother, depending on the day, is very sensitive about her dementia. I would recommend changingthe back cover and maybe making the 1st few pages of the book perforated. The 1st few pages have valuable info.but could be upsetting to the person with memory issues. My mother has mid stage Alzheimer. Book has cute colorful pages.

Thank you for this lovely book geared towards our older loved ones. My mom has Alzheimer's and she loved the pictures and story line. Not childish like other books so she could relate. We especially appreciated the caregivers section that has suggestions for an interactive story time. Great to be able to guide the experience in a non-stressful way. I wish there was a series of books by this author.

I love using this book with my mother in law. She is 94 and has dementia and it really aurprises me that she can read it with me sometimes and sings with me. I am a teacher so I really appreciate the lesson plans. It gives me a means to interact and communicate with her. Thank you for both books in the series

Great book..got it for Dad whom has Alzheimer’s and he loves it..

This was not at all what I expected and it was REALLY expensive - at $23 for something I thought I would be able to read to my mother who has dementia. I was using the electronic version and it was very small. Not sure what the hard copy looks like.

I used to read this book to my Mother who had dementia, and it really was the only book that seemed to keep her attention. It deals with day-to-day events that she could not only relate to, but see through the illustrations on each page. I highly recommend "The Sunshine on My Face" not only to facilities for memory impaired individuals, but also for caregivers at home with their loved ones.Linda Jenkins, family caregiver, Austin, TX

This is a very interesting book if you want to make your own Chinese food in a wok. It gives some history on Chinese food in America and how it's different to what you find in China. The recipes in the book sound wonderful. Unfortunately, I don't own a wok at this time. So I'll have to wait to try any of them. But reading through them, they didn't seem too hard to achieve. If you have a wok, this would be a good cookbook to add to your collection.I received this book for free for my review.

I had not realized before buying this that the content was focused on healthy versions of American Chinese food. What a pleasant surprise! I am new to Wok cooking and this book has been great explaining the different kinds of Wok's, where to buy asian spices and what substitutes to make if you can't find specific items at the grocery store (for example they mention using Mexican Red Chilies if you cannot find Chinese Red Chilies)So far we've made General Tso's Chicken and Dan Dan Noodles. Both of them have been hits with the family. If your new to Wok cooking or want a healthy version of your favorite take-out. This is your book!

This Christmas I received a wok. Cooking is an absolute passion of mine, and I was so excited to get a traditional style carbon steel wok.Only, I had only one or two recipes in my arsenal, certainly nothing worth noting. I needed more and I searched amazon for a cookbook that had authentic style recipes that would still be affordable. I landed on this one.It has some authentic style recipes, healthier versions of well known "Chinese" recipes, along with the basics like plain rice. It also had fun stories on how certain well known recipes came about and how authentic they actually are.I'm lucky to live near a larger city where I have access to grocery stores dedicated to authentic cuisines from every end of the globe, but this book is great because it also breaks it down to ingredients everyone has access to. My family now eats stir fry once a week and I'm happy knowing how much cheaper and healthier it is than take out. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make delicious stir fry.

This book has all your wok favorites from Dan Dan Noodles to General Tso's Chicken to Lemon Chicken to Hoisin Chicken. It even has your traditional soups like Wonton Soup and Egg Drop soup. Newer favorites like Pineapple Fried Rice are also listed. All of the recipes are budget friendly which is why I love Asian wok food. Most of it is gluten free also which seems to be a wonderful plus these days. The book doesn't fall short of it's title The Essential Wok Cookbook. I know it is a handy little favorite now in our kitchen. We just pop up the table and bring out the wok. One dish we are planning to try next is the Hot and Sour Vegetable Soup. We love Hot and Sour soup but, I can be kind of picky so I hope this lives up to my standards and I am able to play with it to get the perfect soup.I would highly recommend this book if you would like to learn how to make Asian food as it a well written front log of information on products.

I am going to get the bad news out of the way first....it's only one sentence anyway: There were not enough pictures. I don't own a Wok and am not real sure I will get one (simply due to storage space) but I WILL be trying SEVERAL of these recipes! My husband and I love Chinese food and this book is full of old time favorites as well as some unfamiliar but tasty sounding ones! Not only do the recipes include the serving size, prep/cook times, gluten status where applicable, but some actually say "Under $10" although I'm not sure how confident I would be in putting that in print. ;) Most recipes also include a tip which might tell you what ingredients could be swapped out for each other, or the different ways that it could be prepared! The book begins with "the basics" and explains the advantages to preparing at home versus take out (YOU can control how healthy and the cost!) but my very favorite sections were the "Origin Stories"! Who knew that Fortune Cookies aren't even made, served or eaten in China! It's purely an American tradition! The more I think about it, I believe I would use a Wok more often than I use my Quesadilla maker! If you love Asian food you need this cookbook!

Great for the beginner or more experienced cook, this book, which in got in exchange for my honesty opinion, hits the spot for many tastes! I got this book along with a new wok so I was excited to get started again! I love how the book gives you some background and history and illustrations to show you how to do things like wrap an egg roll or wonton, and explains step by step how to cook some if your favorite meals and how to prepare your wok right from the beginning to really use it to the best of its abilities. I love the hot and sour soup recipe and the lighter egg foo young recipe and can't wait to try the salt and pepper squid and the general tso's chicken, which is a take out fave of mine I'd love to do at home! So many pages and an easy read, great direction and a new kitchen essential! Well recommended!

This book is okay but has few photos of dishes and those that are included are not labelled. I would not buy this again.

I was pleasantly surprised while reading through this cookbook. I honestly expected all of the recipes to contain a lot of ingredients I didn't have on hand, but that wasn't the case. There are some things I had to go out to purchase, but luckily my supermarket has a very well stocked section of foods from all around the world. I have only been able to try out one recipe so far (Chicken Chow Main), but other than the oyster sauce I had everything I needed in my pantry. I'll definitely be getting more use out of this cookbook and now have no reason to not use my wok. I'm eager to try some of the vegetarian recipes so I have something other than another boring eggplant parm when my friends require meatless options. I did receive this cookbook in exchange for my review, but my opinions are my own.

Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer

Amazon.com Review

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat." As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship. Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell 10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air? A: I have never seen an entire episode of Buffy or Angel. While I was writing Twilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did. I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVo Survivor, The Amazing Race, and America's Next Top Model. Q: What inspired you to write Twilight? Is this the beginning of a series? Why write for teens? A: Twilight was inspired by a very vivid dream, which is fairly faithfully transcribed as chapter thirteen of the book. There are sequels on the way--I'm hard at work editing book two (tentatively titled New Moon) right now, and book three is waiting in line for its turn. I didn't mean to write for teens--I didn't mean to write for anyone but myself, so I had an audience of one twenty-nine year old (and later one thirty-one year old when my sister started reading). I think the reason that I ended up with a book for teens is because high school is such a compelling time period--it gives you some of your worst scars and some of your most exhilarating memories. It's a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone else's approval. There's a lot of scope for a novel in that. Q: What is your favorite vampire story? Fave vampire movie? A: I guess my favorite vampire story would be The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, simply because it's one of the only ones I've ever read. I keep meaning to pick up Bram Stoker's Dracula, because I get asked this question so often and I should probably start with the classics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Again, I'm afraid to read other vampire books now, for fear of finding things either too similar, or too different from my own vampire world. Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's. Q: What other young adult authors do you read? A: My favorite young adult author is L.M. Montgomery I also enjoy J.K. Rowling (but who doesn't?), and Ann Brashares. As a teen, I skipped straight to adult books (lots of sci-fi and Jane Austen), so I'm rediscovering the world of teen literature now. Stephenie Meyer's List of Books You Should Read Anne of Green Gables Romeo and Juliet Dragonflight To Kill a Mockingbird The Princess Bride See more recommendations from Stephenie Meyer Q&A with Stephanie Meyer Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?A: The book with the most significant impact on my life is The Book of Mormon. The book with the most significant impact on my life as a writer is probably Speaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card, with Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier coming in as a close second.Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?A: The CD is easy: Absolution by Muse, hands down. It's harder to give myself just one movie, but the one I watch most frequently is Sense and Sensibility--the one with the screenplay by Emma Thompson. One book is impossible. I'd have to have Pride and Prejudice, but I couldn't live without something by Orson Scott Card and a nice, thick Maeve Binchy, too.Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?A: My lies are all very, very boring: "No, you really look great in hot pink!" "My children only watch one hour of TV a day." "I didn't eat the last Swiss Cake Roll--it must have been one of the kids." That's the best I've got.Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.A: It's late at night and the house is silent, but I'm still (miraculously) full of energy. I have my headphones in and I'm listened to a mix of Muse, Coldplay, Travis, My Chemical Romance, and The All-American Rejects. Beside me is a fabulous, and yet mysteriously low in calorie, cheesecake....Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?A: I'd like it to say that I really tried at the important things. I was never perfect at any of them, but I honestly tried to be a great mom, a loving wife, a good daughter, and a true friend. Under that, I'd want a list of my favorite Simpsons quotes.Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?A: I'd love to have a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card--I have a million questions for him. Mostly things like, "How do you come up with this stuff?!" But, if he wasn't available, I'd settle for Matthew Bellamy (lead singer of Muse).Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?A: I'd want something offensive, rather than defensive. Like shooting fireballs from my hands. That way, you're really open to going either way--hero or villain. I like to have choices.

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 9 Up–Headstrong, sun-loving, 17-year-old Bella declines her mom's invitation to move to Florida, and instead reluctantly opts to move to her dad's cabin in the dreary, rainy town of Forks, WA. She becomes intrigued with Edward Cullen, a distant, stylish, and disarmingly handsome senior, who is also a vampire. When he reveals that his specific clan hunts wildlife instead of humans, Bella deduces that she is safe from his blood-sucking instincts and therefore free to fall hopelessly in love with him. The feeling is mutual, and the resulting volatile romance smolders as they attempt to hide Edward's identity from her family and the rest of the school. Meyer adds an eerie new twist to the mismatched, star-crossed lovers theme: predator falls for prey, human falls for vampire. This tension strips away any pretense readers may have about the everyday teen romance novel, and kissing, touching, and talking take on an entirely new meaning when one small mistake could be life-threatening. Bella and Edward's struggle to make their relationship work becomes a struggle for survival, especially when vampires from an outside clan infiltrate the Cullen territory and head straight for her. As a result, the novel's danger-factor skyrockets as the excitement of secret love and hushed affection morphs into a terrifying race to stay alive. Realistic, subtle, succinct, and easy to follow, Twilight will have readers dying to sink their teeth into it.–Hillias J. This is exactly what I wanted, I'm so glad I ended up buying it. My set is perfect, I don't have bent in edges like others have mentioned. I'm going to have to be quite careful with this set, the white is so gorgeous in person. If anybody reading this is skeptical about buying this collection, I say go for it! It's a great price for what you're getting. This is truly a wonderful gift for any Twilight fan.

The Kindle set of books was fine, until Breaking Dawn. The whole part of the birth and Jacobs imprinting were missing from the book. Instead they repeated the Bella chapter twice. So it went directly into the chapter of the burning. I own the hard cover books and this is not an issue in them. Needless to say, I was unhappy with this purchase.

I love having the full matching box set to add to my library. A part of me wishes I would have stopped by half price books to pick up the novels but it was great having it delivered and matching for 30 some odd dollars. One star off because the back page (the red side) chips away easily. I have only held them and bookmarked them and the back looks worn. Otherwise, I'm happy with my purchase.

Okay I first read this book 10 years ago. Around the time it first came out but before all the hype. I fell in love with it immediately. I have reread this book many time's and never get tired of it. Of course I am Team Edward all the way. I fell in love with the vampire who is trying to be good but falls in love with Bella the girl who's blood he can not resist. I know lots of people criticized Stephanie Meyers writing but I don't care. I love her writing and if people call me dumb for it oh well.

I first read this book and series because I have a habit when I movie comes out based on the book in the science fiction fantasy and even paranormal genres that I like to read it before the movie. This book and series was my introduction to paranormal Romance. I've since read fairly heavily in the genre and my perspective of the series has changed slightly but not too much from my original thoughts. When approaching the series you have to recognize it for what it is. The target range is for young girls in their mid-teens and up. It is focused on the emotional journey and the physical mysteries of youth more than action and adventure. It is a very clean book with no foul language and a instant love story where two people become obsessed with each other one because of the flawless beauty and hint of danger she sees in Edward the other in the the fact that he can't read her mind and her blood calls to the monster inside him. In the series is a whole there will be a false love triangle which was played up much more in the movies and an advertisement as team Edward and team Jacob. Again it is not meant to be full of action but rather an emotional rollercoaster with dangerous and mysterious love interest that the reader if they're honest with themselves knows where it will end but we'll enjoy the ride nonetheless. As much as it sounds like I may be complaining Stephenie Meyer's is a good writer. She writes in a fashion that is clearly understandable and from the perspective and mindset of a young woman. That means not necessarily a rational young woman who makes clear and logical decisions but one who is intelligent and despite the shallow nature of her love is actually a selfless person. It was not until book three that we get several chapters from Jacobs perspective where we see the mind of a Young Man that I realize how good she was in writing from perspective and not showing her hand to the audience. Bella's interaction with other characters covers up something I had not really noticed I strongly until I came back to the series... that the character of Bella has no interest or at least shown to have no active interest really in anything other than Edward. She has shown to enjoy reading certain romantic books but there's no passion for life outside of Edward, no hobbies, or really goals to strive for. This is something that newer readers may not notice but those who have red heavily in fiction will pick up and it will be a fly in the ointment. The mythos that she built into the story does grow throughout the series and feels true to this world that she creates. In this first book she reveals vampires not to be the hideous things that hide in the dark but rather beautiful predators, yes they sparkle LOL, that are designed entirely to attract and destroy their pray but have a conscience that makes them want to be more than just simple monsters. In truth considering the physical power and extra powers of the vampires particularly as the series goes on with another writer or a different style of story they could have been truly terrifying. However for the genre and target audience it was a perfect hit that of course made Stephenie Meyers millions.I came to the series when the nation was swept up in the movie. I have a habit of reading books that are made into movies before actually watching the movie. and the first time I read it I wanted to be able to have an opinion of the book series for myself rather than taking others words for it. while I did enjoy the story the more that I read into the genre the more I realize that the twilight series was safe and was meant for a younger audience. The stories did mature as the years went on but not to a degree that would make it too inappropriate for high schoolers. I also realize that it was meant mostly to be a romance before anything else.Looking back having read the series multiple times and buying the books because I felt guilty for not supporting the author I think Bella Swan while having a rough start in the first book in terms of character depth becomes a different sort of hero in the end. She may not be a sword wielding assassin but she has a strength and determination as well as bravery that makes her relatable.I do think that looks three and four of the series are better than books one and two. The first book they love story just feel shallow. The second book with how the author had to introduce a character for the false love triangle while also putting the main love interest to the side for a while was rather annoying period in the third and fourth books it feels like a lot of the nonsense is put to the side and it gets down to the nitty-gritty no more wavering to milk the what ifs.

I read this after scrutinizing the five feature films, and found this a very enjoyable read on its own, but as an adjunct to the films it is extra nice and worthwhile too, because it answers a few questions I had about some details. I realize now that fans of the book would have known the details going in, and that's fine because I came late to the party. And the love story.I like the first person narrative, because there is no one who could tell her story better than Bella herself, making this fresh, light reading, an attractive story, and a romance for all ages.

That's all the world needs is another review of "Twilight". Still, I felt compelled to put my three cents in. Getting into the literary world I had to read what is called a pop cultural phenomena. I was surprised at so many negative reviews in print and word mouth. My take: It ain't that bad...and it ain't that good. I'm not big into vampire lore, so I'm no expert, but I thought the fresh take on vamps was good. I'm not gonna worry about spoilers because, this review is probably too little too late, but I like the take on how sunlight affects the vampires, how they have special and different powers and how there are some in this story that are humane...even if they aren't human. I love how the wolves are set up for next book.I love the overall premise that two people are hopelessly attracted to each other in an almost impossible situation: Edward is so intoxicated with the scent of Bella's blood it is all he can do to not drink her blood/kill her.But it is soooo....mushy, over-the-top...unrealistically so. But maybe that's what makes a story so compelling and unique. It's just too much for my taste. I think it is one of those rare times when the movie outperforms the novel because it reels-in some of the mushiness and give more of the meat and potatoes of "the vampire in love story" with all of the neat things that vampires can do highlighted.I do think the book could've have been shorter and better without comprising it's essence by just cutting out some of the mushiness...maybe using words like "incredulous" half as much.Just a thought.John Darryl Winston

This book is well-illustrated, providing the history of aircraft carriers by country. Every carrier that had its keel laid, and every ship modified to carry more than ten aircraft, is documented in this book. It even includes separate histories of carriers transferred to post-war navies. It's a terrific addition to your library if you're interested in the history of naval warfare. I will no doubt refer to it often in the future.

If you want a good book on Carriers? This is the book. It is loaded with pictures Grafts and info from all nations from day one up to today's floating city's of the US Navy. to be honest I'll be thinking twice before adding any other book on Carriers to my Library.

This book is an excellent read! It gives many details and there are many pictures that give us a look into the world of aircraft carriers. This was a gift for my 9 year old son and he reads it every day!

A comprehensive presentation of the ship's with accompanying photographs of the interesting development of the type of Warship that has become today the symbol of the 'Projection of Power'. Several generations ago the Royal Navy would send a battlefleet.

Excellent book very informative great drawing and pictures.

As a child I drew hundreds of maps for pleasure...and later, professionally, for the States of Connecticut and Delaware. Even without that kind of a background, however, I believe most readers would find this a most interesting tome. History; surveying; mining; geology; canal building...and the personalities involved, will surely interest the most laconic reader. I'm just sorry that I didn't know of the maps existence when we were in England; for I would surely have made an effort to view it. If you're planning a trip a trip to England...read this book first !

William Smith and his map may have been the opening shot in the ongoing battle for reason to win out over superstition as creationists still insist on a 6000 year old earth and against evolution. It also shows how hierarchical British science was at the time and remained for many years. Smith, much like James Harrison, had to fight for recognition of his accomplishments.I've read several of Winchester's books over the years and find them to be reliably interesting and informative. If you're interested in how science has come to describe the natural world, this book should be on your reading list.

The story of William Smith as brilliantly told by Simon Winchester should inspire every person whose ideas will contribute to the advancement of his fellow man. It should also encourage us in our setbacks to carry on and perform even better. I marveled at Smith's genius, but I was in awe of his persistence and the belief in himself, and I was made thankful that he was destined to be appreciated before he died. I'm his own way, William Smith was a saint and Simon Winchester proved to be a worthy hagiographer.

Simon Winchester is a great author. I read his books about the great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and the eruption of Krakatoa..5 stars..see my reviews. The Map that Changed the World is about William Smith the "Father of Geology" and the Great Map of England's Geology that he created. We see William as a young man as a surveyor of coal mines and canals in England in the early 19th century as England was getting a great industrialization. He temporarily has a very good income but over stretched his finances, buying a large estate with a large mortgage, renting an expensive apartment, opening up a mine that fails and marrying a woman who develops heath problems and severe mental illnesses. He is fired from his job and tries getting smaller temporary jobs but eventually is thrown in "Debtors Prison". He is financially ruined.William through the decades learns about the different strata layers of the earth and the different fossils that are in certain layers. He learns the layers represent different ages of the earth and are very, very old.He believes much, much older than anyone thought. He battles people who for religious reasons believe that God created the earth in 1 day and the earth is way less than 10.000 years old. Today by carbon radioactive isotope dating, we know that some of these rock layers are hundreds of millions of years old and older. In William's early 1800th days no one knew this. Also a rich, snob member of the "Geologist Society" steals William's geology data and plagiarizes his great Map of England's underground Geology. A friend takes financially destroyed William and his wife in. Eventually the snobs in the Geology Society lose their power and William is recognized as the true "Father of Geology and the true creator of the great Map of England's Geology. William is given the ultimate recognition by his peers, the gold Wollaston Medal. Eventually, William gets his true Great colored Map of England's Geology printed and copies sold. He is given an Irish honorary doctorate degree and a $100LB pension from the English government. Finally he has the recognition as the "Father of English Geology and the creator of the Great Colored Large Map of English Geology.I won't ruin the ending for you. A great ending. Anyone interested in the history of Geology, fossils or map creation will enjoy this book plus you will learn a little about the different Earth layers and where some different kinds of fossils are located in the different layers/ages.I developed a lot of empathy for William Smith and gave a small cheer when he eventually gets his recognition as "Father of Geology", and the creator of the Great Colored large Map of English Geology a revolutionary breakthrough showing the underground geology layers that changed people's thinking about how the earth rock/layers were formed, the rock layers ages ,and life at differnt ages on earth) and happiness. 5 stars and recommended. Another winner by Simon Winchester!

After finishing this biography, I would say it was "exciting." But that was certainly not the feeling I had reading it. The author is too flowery, using long descriptions of the times and events and other personages. It took me three starts over five years to finally get into it, and to do so I had to skip a lot. If you like elaborate descriptions of England, and English society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and looking up the meanings of obscure words you will love this book.Seven months later, I reread this review and felt it was too negative--gives the wrong impression. I still give the book four stars as I did previously, but don't know how to fix my own paragraph description so I shall let it stand and supply this supplemental note: It's kind of like watching all the Lord of the Ring movies. They were great but the sheer length is a deterrent from watching them again. In regard to this book, it was great and even the memories of it are still inspirational, but the excessive descriptions are a disincentive for rereading it again. Understand that this is only my preference, if you like or at least don't mind the descriptive passages you will love this book.

An interesting read about a little known figure, but the story sort of drags along and seems to be longer to tell the story than is needed. Would have liked to see an image of the geological map Smith apparently made that the story centered around.

An informative set of details that bring forward the beginning of the original development of the first geologic map. There are a variety of interesting points and it's well written. However, the author dangs out the book with details barely connected to the theme. The same excellent story could be told in less the number of pages or as a short story.

The book is wonderful and altho I'm not finished reading it, I gave it 5 stars already. I have a LOT of reading so I read my non-fictions in fits and starts when I get a chance (during commercials, while waiting at the doctor's office, etc.) This is one I'm having a hard time putting back down. Very well-written and thank goodness for guys (and gals) that had the courage to look beyond conventional thinking and look towards science. Good book - recommend to all!

I bought a mini pie maker, and needed some ideas to get me "jump -started" in making mini pies. This book has a lot of recipes for both sweet and savory pie fillings and for pastry pie crusts. In the savory pies, it has some great ideas for pies that can be a main course for dinner as well as some that would be great for breakfast.Since my 96 year old mother moved in with us 4 years ago, I am always looking for new ideas for breakfast/lunch for her and for quick meals for us when I am short of time. For my mother, my husband has the morning shift and I have the night shift. My husband really isn't into cooking, so I try to make meals ahead that will be easy for him to warm up for her. Although I usually make more than we can eat for dinners so that we have a complete meal to freeze for my mother, the mini pies are a perfect and easy way to provide my mother with a balanced meal that is easy for my husband to warm up for her. I haven't made any of the sweet pies, but generally double the recipe for the savory pies to make 12 pies. After they cool, I wrap the individually with plastic wrap and freeze them. Sometimes we will all have a mini pie with a bowl of homemade soup for a quick dinner, but very often, most of the pies are alternated with other meals for my mother's early meal. The great thing about homemade mini pies is that you know what goes into them. You can use cream soups as a base for the gravy or you can use homemade broth that has been thickened to make a gravy. You can use any meat or veggies in them and make them as healthy and balanced as you want. The mini pies freeze really well and can be made with leftovers if you choose.Although I seldom follow recipes exactly, this book has given me a lot of great ides to get started. I have other mini pie cookbooks, but I have found this one to be the most useful because it focuses on pies made in a mini pie maker. The other books are helpful for ingredient ideas, but you often have to convert quantities to what would be suitable for mini pies made in an electric mini pie maker. If the recipe is for a 9" pie, it can be difficult to figure out how much of each ingredient you would need to make the quantity of mini pies you want to make. FYI, I have found that one package containing 2 crusts will make 12 pies if you roll out the leftover dough to make more crusts. I have also learned from experience that the crusts are less likely to stick to the tool that pushes crusts into the maker if you cut the crusts and then put them into the frig on wax paper until you are ready to use them. When the crust dough gets warm, it is more likely to stick to the pushing tool as you push the lower crust into the pie maker.I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that wants to get started at making their own mini pies. With the ideas and recipes in this book, you are limited only by your imagination.

I purchased a Breville pie maker and was struggling to find websites with more recipes, tips and information. I found this book on Amazon and decided to try it out. It's very well written by an excellent author. I see her articles all the time in Fine Cooking magazine. She gives great tips on how to use it with a nice combination of savory and sweet pies. So far the Summer Berry pie is my favorite and so easy to make. I am still experimenting with pie crust and puff pastry, but this book even has a homemade pie dough recipe that works. I look forward to working my way through alot of these recipes, especially the fruit pies in the summer.I am a big pie maker, and it's a labor of love and planning to make a Sunday pie. I really like that I can pull it off in under 30 minutes with my mini pie maker. All of the fruit pies either need minimal cooking or you simply stir the ingredients together. One tip: I put turbinado sugar on top of my puff pastry top layer, and it made the pies beautifully shiny once cooked.

Fun book on making mini pies. Perfect for beginners. It keeps the recipes simple and gives good details with lots of pictures. There are recipes in the back of the book for most of the items that can be store bought like the pie crust. Personally I think this book is just plain fun and not really aimed at the serious cook.

It wasn't very helpful

Good book but for pie maker, you can still use the recipes though.

For the price it was a good deal. I have a mini six pie maker, this was for a mini 4 pie maker.

Good book. Wish there were more sweet pie recipes

Definitely a must have for the mini pie maker! From scratch recipes!! You won't be disappointed.

Needed more recipes for my pie maker. This was the right price and has some interesting recipes that I'll eventually try.
