Guys, this works! Best $12 I've ever spent. I am still in disbelief.We have tried everything, traditional flash cards, tri-corner flash cards, cuisenaire rods, computer games, dice and card games, wrap ups, 3 different math curricula over the past 3 years...and my second grader most of the time still struggled to recall 2+1 on a flash card. Blank stares. She couldn't finish a worksheet with 5 of the simplest problems on it without a LOT of coaxing, reminding, refocusing. Blanking out, freezing up.I did this with at the same time with both a second grader and a kindergartener who had zero formal math training. They BOTH get the process and can finish a 24 problem worksheet in under 5 minutes with 100% accuracy with zero interference from me. I am blown away. The only thing I did differently was practicing "visualizations" daily. I'd set up a problem on the 10 frames, flash it to them for a few seconds, and they would write the problem and the answer on their worksheet. We did this for 10 problems daily, and by week 5 my math-hating child said, "Why do you mostly just give us easy problems now?" Because they're mostly all easy now!It is fast, simple, FUN, requires very few resources, and it WORKS.There is a subtraction program being released in December 2016. I will not hesitate to buy it.
I am very thankful that this book saved my daughter and I from hours of flash cards. Children learn when they are engaged and having fun, and this book will show you how to make learning addition facts fun. The book consists of approximately: 30 pages of instruction to be followed over a course of 6 weeks, nine pages of game boards, and 24 practice pages. The instructions are very clear about what the parent is supposed to say and do. As a homeschooling mom, this book has been very helpful to me as I teach addition facts to my oldest child.
I wish I could give this 6 stars. I really do! The lessons are so easy and concise; you can open up the book and gather the materials (pennies or other counters, deck of cards, etc.) in a matter of minutes. I'm really impressed with Kate Snow's methodology and application of math concepts. Her games are ingenious.We just finished up Week 4 with an almost 6 year old, and the only game he didn't absolutely love was the first one. All the other ones have been a hit, and even that first one was pretty much a hit. He begs me to play extra rounds of the games with him, and he begs me to teach him more math lessons.I'm amazed to see how playing these games and visualizing on the ten-frame has increased his confidence and speed. We have done a lot of work with cuisinaire rods using Miquon Math and the Math Enhancement Programme, but a lot of the math facts weren't sticking. I am so thankful that Kate wrote this book, and that I happened upon it. I wish she could write full math curricula for K-12. Please, Kate! It's not too much to ask, is it ;-)
we're homeschooling 1st grade but we wrapped up our Singapore Math curriculum in March and rather than plow through to 2nd grade, I decided on the recommendation of homeschooling friends, to pause and really cement the math facts in my son's mind before moving on. We're finishing up week 6 now and the difference is stunning! He used to get frustrated trying to remember his addition facts or just throw out haphazard guesses, but now they're really part of his memory! The games are easy and fun, the lessons completely simple to deliver, and the practice sheets just right! After this we're going to move on to the Subtraction Facts that stick. I absolutely recommend working this into your homeschool, or for my public school friends using it to shore up these basics this summer before moving onto 2nd grade. Older students could definitely benefit too!
I was so excited to see this book. My son has some special needs and has especially been struggling with math. He is significantly behind and it's hard to move forward until he can master the basics of addition.The ideas in the book are simple and tangible but not exactly groundbreaking. Common core uses many of the strategies. This book did simplify many of the common core strategies so I gave it a shot.LIMITATION - I think this book and it's strategies would work wonderfully with someone who is a visual learner. Almost all of the strategies use visual representation to understand the equation and learn the answer. My son unfortunately have issues with visual learning and this book did absolutely nothing to help his addition skills.
My 6 year old said she wants me to keep this book so that she teach her children with it. She was concerned that she might have more than one kid and maybe I should buy another book now, just in case.
I homeschool my child to stay away from books like these. I was recommended this book for my child to get ready for first grade and after reading it and feeling LOST on first-grade math I was confused and looked up common core math and that's what this is. A simplified version of it. I loved how the author states in the beginning that she "realized kids these days needed to learn basic math problems like 4+7 because they didn't know them anymore as they used too." That is paraphrasing and not an exact quote but that was her reason for writing this book. The reason kids don't know math is because they have to read stuff like this. I taught college years ago and each year I taught the new students coming in were dumber than the last because they had less and less of real education and more of this kind of stuff. Parents if you are wondering what to do. Stay away. Colleges don't accept common core math and will not accommodate for it so what you are doing to your kids is making everything so much harder.
I purchased the kindle edition and it does not work as well as the traditional book would. I like the information, just not the Kindle format.
